RELATIONSHIFTS: On Friday, December 22nd two anti-war protestors hope that you’ll do something sexy to help put an end to war. Instead of forcibly making a change through combat and killing, their hoping to gradually change the world by coming. Alone or with a partner, the moral of their story is a happy ending. That’s right, Donna Sheehan and Paul Reffell are asking you to join their orgasmic revolution.
Believing that the energy of everyone’s orgasms can effectively create a change in the world, these two artists are calling out for your support. That’s why they’ve declared Friday the “First Annual Solstice Synchronized Global Orgasm for Peace” day, which is a bit more than a mouthful if you ask me. They’re looking at this as a time when the consciousness of the world can be raised through the power of getting off. Might sound kookier than Mel Gibson after a drink, but it’s not all that far-fetched an idea. According to research done by the Global Consciousness Project, an international collaboration of scientists, artists and engineers, global effects have been measured on days when human consciousness is peaked (like after 9/11), and if all people can reach that peak together, how can consciousness not be affected? In terms of sex, what is a human’s peak? Yes, that’s right, the Big O.
While this is not their first attempt at world peace, it is their latest. As the founders of the organization called Baring Witness, they once started a movement using naked people to form words, particularly words like peace. They got a little attention for it back in 2002, but being from Northern California it wasn’t like coming out of left field or anything.
So now, four year later, claiming that two more U.S. Anti-Submarine fleets are heading for the Persian Gulf (as if that’s the only thing heading there) they’re getting ready to make another attempt to harness a change for the better.
As for going to town, they don’t care if you use a finger, a vibe, a hand or a butt plug, they just want to make sure that you do it. And they don’t care when either, anytime is good for them, just as long as it’s sometime that day (although somewhere else in the world it might already be another day). Anyway, too much thinking isn’t going to work with this one, so instead of putting all your energy into wondering why, put your energy into doing the deed.
The two organizers “hope that a huge influx of physical, mental and spiritual energy with the conscious peace intent will have profound positive effects that will change the violent state of the human world.” Yeah, they’re still from Northern California, but as much as I want to make fun of the idea, I’m willing to give it a try.
I mean, back in July of 1993, 4,000 participants with the National Demonstration Project to Reduce Violent Crime and Improve Governmental Effectiveness (another mouthful of an organization) spent almost two months in Washington DC doing transcendental meditation to drop the crime rate of that city. Even though the police force was skeptical, after two months of meditation, the rate of homicides, rapes and assaults dropped a ridiculously significant 48%. There’s power in thought, don’t you think?
I do believe that we have the power to believe in change, and then see that change manifest. I didn’t grow up with parents who smoked pot and burned patchouli, but perhaps the fact that I’m all for trying to come for a cause, makes me a bit hippy-dippy anyway. But still, I’ll own it, and ask, what’s the harm in giving this a go? Even if you’re not an extremely focused person, there’s no better time or place to give this a try. What’s the worst that can happen? You have an orgasm. You don’t change the world. Is that so wrong?
