Bushwick Open Studios and Arts Festival

Come out and join us for a weekend of art, music, performance, food, community, and fun. Bushwick Open Studios is a self-organized art festival that incorporates artists opening their studios to the public with events that further showcase the creativity of the
neighborhood. The festival begins with music and theater Friday night and continues with an art parade, the Bushwick Cabaret and Art Spectacular and a community barbecue with film screenings and music.

Anyone in the community is welcome to participate by presenting art work, organizing activities, or by helping to produce the event. The purpose of the festival is to create an open and inclusive event that benefits the entire community by sharing artistic projects and encouraging community interaction and dialogue. Nearly 200 artists have already registered to participate this year and the number is growing everyday. The festival is organized by volunteers under the name Arts in Bushwick, in cooperation with other area nonprofits, arts organizations, and businesses. The festival builds on the success of a number of open studios days and other events that have taken place in Bushwick over the last several years. It represents the collective effort of dozens of artists and other Bushwick residents who seek to create a forum for Bushwick locals to connect with each other, celebrate our community, and share work with each other and the public.

The festival kicks off Friday night Hotbox, a night of dance, theater, sex, and magic. The evening features performance and theater followed by music by the Dive, Pass Kontrol, and Ways. Festival continues through the weekend. Check website for complete
listings.

Unconditional Healing: Illness & Discovering One’s True Self with Jeff Rubin

Illness is like sand in the engine of our life, stalling us, and often leaving us in despair. The conventional view of illness is that it’s something to be resisted and discarded at the earliest opportunity, and that it offers no intrinsic value or worth. Consequently, if the illness is chronic or life-threatening, we often feel a loss of self esteem and self-worth, and a sense of isolation.

The more expansive view of illness is that it is a profound and auspicious coincidence, forcing us to confront questions of mortality and well being, and offering us the opportunity to experience our genuine nature. This is the view of illness that we will explore and practice together. The weekend will afford an opportunity to connect with others who share our fear and confusion, as well as our underlying sanity and basic goodness, and to practice alleviating both our own and other’s suffering. Jeff Rubin became a student of the Venerable Chögyam Trungpa, Rinpoche in 1973 and has been teaching in the Shambhala Buddhist tradition for over 25
years. 212-675-6544.
