Microscopes And Mystics with Neil D. Theise: Explorations into The Nature Of Body & Being Through The Study of Stem Cells
Western biology and medicine are “Western” because they derive from the foundational notion that bodies are made of cells. The success of this cell doctrine has come through a steadily reductionist approach, breaking the body down into ever smaller constituent parts. However, one under appreciated implication of contemporary stem cell research is the need to start reassembling these pieces into an interactive whole, the reverse of the reductionist approach. Further analysis from such a “systems biology” approach undermines the concept of the cell itself as having independent, inherent existence and opens the door to other just as useful and accurate models of the body. Such other models may be a close, or perhaps even exact parallel to Indo-Tibetan medical traditions such as the identification of coarse, energy, and subtle bodies. Moreover, extending this analysis downward in scale, below the molecular biology level into the quantum realm, the science yields a precise description of key features of Buddhist metaphysics: the relationship between the Absolute and the Relative, emptiness of inherent existence, interdependence, and impermanence.
Neil Theise, MD is a diagnostic liver pathologist and adult stem cell researcher at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York City , where he is Professor of Pathology and Associate Professor of Medicine. He is credited with establishing the existence of human liver stem cells and is also considered a pioneer of multi-organ adult stem cell plasticity, publishing on that topic in the leading journals Science, Nature, and Cell. His current passion is applications of complexity theory to cell, molecular and tissue biology. He is a long time Zen student of Roshi Enkyo O’Hara at the Village Zendo in New York . His writings can be found on line at www.neiltheise.com .

Sustainable Scrapyard Challenge: Part 2
Current R&D OpenLab Fellow Jonah Brucker-Cohen and Katherine Moriwaki will run one of their now infamous MIDI Scrapyard Challenges. The Scrapyard Challenge is an intensive workshop where participants build simple electronic music controllers (both digital and analog inputs) out of found or discarded “junk” (old electronics, furniture, outdated computer equipment, appliances, turntables, monitors, gadgets, etc.). All work made during the challenge will be powered by the alternative energy sources created during the previous week’s workshop. Participants will be contacted once they sign up, and given instructions as to what forms of found objects they should bring to the workshop. At the end of the day, workshop participants take part in a small ensemble performance/concert with their instruments.
