SpeakEasy: Stories From the Back Room

The Guest host is Andy Christie with stories by: Josh Lefkowitz, Martin Dockery, Darlene White, Ryan Paulson, Dave Dickerson, Kimberlee Auerbach.  It’s Fall, my friends. Once again we’ve slipped into the future. And thank goodness. The future is mesmerizing. Which is to say, there’s more YouTube content. My only disappointment is that there aren’t newer emoticons. That there’s still no way to convey either wistful or melancholy using nothing but punctuation, makes me feel +(. (Not to be confused with “like a cyclops.”)  Perhaps someday we’ll all communicate in nothing but emoticons. Until that day, though, come hear some words, some stories:

Activate & Spectra party at Cosmosis

Activate & Spectra celebrate CoSM’s 3rd Anniversary with a night of progressive psy trance dancing in CoSMosis. Featuring the psychedelic art deco of the Sonic Beating collective who received praise from Alex Grey for their recent space-shaping work at the recent Entheocentric Salon in Boston.  (Digital Structures / Sweden) Live.  Ticon (Digital Structures - Sweden) are Filip Mardberg and Fredrik Gilenholt. The story of their musical involvement dates back to 1991 when they found mutual interest for underground dance music. Around 1995, they made thier first track in Fredriks bedroom, but it wasnt until the Swedish and Malmoe based label Digital Structures contacted them in 1999 that things started to get clear and they formed Ticon. After releasing on almost every now classic trance lable they earned a spot in the growing group of respected tranceproducers. Released in April 2001 on Digital Structures, their first full length album received fantastic reviews and is today a milestone in progressive music. It’s been a great journey from the first releases, and with landmark albums like “Rewind” and “Aero” to “Zero Six After” released in 2005, they have earned a top spot position in the trance and club scene.   -Earthian a.k.a. Autumnal Equinox Shamanic Fire Ceremony at Yoga Studio West

Presented by Joe Monkman.   Allow yourself to be supported with strenghth and power as you participate in the liberating process of the Fire Ceremony. The sounds of drums and rattles along with the sacred circle of the gathering, will transport you into an altered state of consciousness. Shamanic and energetic healer Joe Monkman will shepard you through your approach to the symbolic fire. Touch our own candle to the central candle and allow yourself to be purified and transformed. Begin the new season with a new you.  Please bring the following things:1. A clear intention of what you wish to release or invoke into your life that can be shared with the group.  2. A drum, rattle or appropriate sound maker.  3. Notebook and pen.  4. A birthday candle.  Joe Monkman has been a student of shamanism for over ten years. He studies shamanic traditions and techniques with healers in the United States and Peru. Joe is also a Registered Polarity Practitioner and Certified Fitness Instructor. He has a private healing practice in New York City.   Fire Ceremony Preparation  Fire Ceremonies have been used for centuries in diverse cultures around the world by people who understand that the sacred, healing energy of fire, combined with powerful intent, can create profound change, and purify the spirit, mind and body.  For our purposes, the Fire Ceremony will be used to create an opportunity to “release” or “invite in” pertinent issues on the cutting edge of your development. You may look at this as a rite of passage - a sacred moment in time when the Universe gathers you in its loving arms, adding light to all aspects of your life. You may, for example, “invite in” something positive such as sensitivity, creativity, openness, courage, focus, etc. You may also “release” something negative such as confusion, complaining, self-doubt, or limited thinking. Please choose just one issue. That issue, and your intention, should be clear and focused, single-pointed, like an arrow. Do not put any limits or conditions on what the Universe can teach you in reference to what you are releasing or inviting in.  It is advised that until you have worked with the fire ceremony for a long period of time, you avoid the larger, more deep-seated issues such as fear, addiction, and disease. Also, your issue should not involve personal material gain, nor can it involve the manipulation of another person’s will. We suggest that you work with an issue that is within your reach, but in need of help to accomplish it. This is an opportunity to focus your attention in an active meditation, to assist in your personal healing and growth.  The fire ceremony is a celebration, and all participants are encouraged to sing from the soul, open their hearts and minds, dance, drum, and connect deeply with the ecstatic energy.   There is a sacred two-week period after the ceremony in which “instances of opportunity” may appear. This could be a chance to bring the teachings of the fire into your daily life, giving you a deeper understanding of your patterns and habits.  Please refrain from using drugs or alcohol on the day of the fire ceremony (before and after the ceremony). That will allow the medicine of the fire to have the most profound healing effect.

Yom Kippur is the Jewish Day of Atonement, a day when as a community, Jews are asked to reflect on the actions of the past year and ask for atonement for any actions that were unskillful. In support and respect for this day, New York Insight will host a day of silence and reflection. There will be meditations focused on the idea of right action, the difference between guilt and remorse, the laws of karma, forgiveness and loving kindness. There will also be an opportunity for mindful discussion of the Buddhist perspective on atonement. All are welcome to join us in this exploration. The day will end with a symbolic break-fast.

Jessaiah Zure is an accomplished dancer with 9 years experience in Oriental Dance. She has studied Turkish Roman/Rom dance in Istanbul with Reyhan Tusuz as well as other dancers for over 5 years and is now a well known dancer in Istanbul. Turkish Roman Dance is a street style dance which continuously evolves through different movements and interpretations, being very personal in nature. The movements are focused on an up motion of the pelvis, making the belly move up and down. There are also a variety of hand gestures and footwork involved which make the dance tell a story.  The workshop will follow the original way of learning, (the way Reyhan Tusuz teaches) and every Roman learns, which is to follow, watch and learn. Through this the authetntic and natural form can be attained. Included as well will be the typical folkloric Roman moves, differentiate the men and women moves,explain appropriate and un-appropriate moves for the stage/cafes/weddings, more complicated feet work, and footage of some original and authentic Turkish Roman dancing.   $150 for the whole session. Fall Equinox Mabon Sabbat Celebration - A witches Thanks Giving

Come and enjoy.  The September Equinox is always a beautiful, natural phenomenon worthy of our recognition and honor. On this particular holiday, we cry and we laugh.   Mabon puts us in touch with the transformational elements of life here on Earth. This is a bittersweet stop on the ever-turning Wheel of the Year.  The Autumn Equinox /Mabon ritual carries the wisdom of the ages and hopefully divine inspiration, which will give sacred life and meaning to the many challenges and changes we face, and to the light and shadows around us.  We, as priestesses (all females) and priests (all males) paint little blue tears on our faces. Some of us literally cry, morning the gradual disappearance of the Sun, but then we immediately rejoice and thank the Mother for giving birth to the Son, for holding him in Her womb, and for nurturing him.  Purpose: Rituals in general, help to reconnect us us with a heightened sense of spritiuality. By participating we become more fluent in communing with experiences that often defy understanding in the physical world. In a ritual we can balance reality or our position in everyday society with Nature. We might discover the need for a change in our lives, or we might convey a passionate commitment to protect our environment. Rituals are insightful, empathetic, and enjoyable.  A Mabon Sabbat ritual followed by a gathering for a true Feast of Harvest. Everyone must bring a dish of any kind for us all to partake in this giant Harvest Festival Feast. Dishes like potatoes, corn, breads, juices, wines, meats, vegetables etc. Let’s give thanks. A true buffet style Harvest Dinner.  Attire: Suggested colors are black – you can add colors of the Sun and Earth to it like orange, yellow, wine, russet, copper, gold bronze and brown (not required for attendance).   If anyone has hand instruments please bring as many as possible.  Drumming brings great energies together, as we always create our own music.  Blessed be.

AAuto-Free New York: Light Rail in France

The September monthly meeting of Auto-Free New York will feature remarks by Paul Rivey, Civil Engineer and Urban Planner from Paris.

More than a dozen medium-sized French cities have built new light rail systems in the past two decades. Now even Paris has caught the spirit and completed its first line within the city walls. Light rail provides an appealing alternative to motor vehicles in dense places.  But where’s NYC? The Mayor’s new 2030 sustainability plan completely ignores this winning mode. Find out how France succeeded. Come to the next Auto-Free NY meeting to hear Paul Rivey, a French urban planner and engineer talk about the City of Light - and Light Rail!

Full-Moon Chanting: A Powerful Time for Spiritual Practice

During the full moon, whatever thoughts are predominant in the mind become magnified. Full-moon chanting sessions uplift the mind and focus it in a positive new direction. We will chant two powerful mantras, first for enlightenment, then for world peace and healing for those in need, and end with a silent meditation.

==========Call for Artists & Organizers for a Saturday, September 29 Show=====

Theory Art Party: China1 Antique Lounge

Hello Wonderful Artists, Organizers, and Generally Cool People: Saturday September 29th, Theory’s putting on the Ritz for artcrime3:takeover(ture) , the latest in our series of scandalous mixed media mixers at the China1 Antique Lounge, located at 50 Avenue B between 3rd and 4th Streets. With an early kickoff and a really exciting performance lineup, this promises to be the best yet in a series of increasingly awesome art parties.   We’re accepting submissions for the show through Wednesday, September 26 at 8pm, and this is a hard deadline. We will finalize the show at 8:15pm on Wednesday the 26th. I know a number of artists already have pieces ready or submitted because of the absence of the open gallery last month, but I’d greatly appreciate it if you’d pass the word along to any artists whom you’d like to show with, as well as sending us some of your own pieces if you haven’t already. This should be the biggest and best art show as well as the biggest and best of our parties. The great people at the venue have been impressed enough with our parties to hire me on as a manager, and rest assured that I’m using my expanded resources as such to make Saturday the 29th a night to remember.  Submissions should be hi-res image files, preferably jpegs, captioned in-image with artist’s name and the work’s title. If you do not caption your works, you only will receive artist attribution on program sheets displayed throughout the venue, organized in order of appearance. Unless otherwise specified by the artist, submissions will used for digital display only and for one night only, Saturday September 29th, and will not be used by Theory Events or The Venue for any other purposes. All submissions should be e-mailed to theoryeventsnyc@gmail.com.  Please specify whether you’d allow us to use your art for promotional purposes in your submission e-mail. If you don’t say anything about
promotional purposes, then we won’t use it. If you let us use your art for promotional purposes, it will be attributed and shown to at least hundreds of people.  I urge any interested artists to submit at least five pieces for the show, and barring a total deluge of submissions, all works within reason and a fairly broad span of taste will be shown. We’ll have space at our merch table for zero-commission print sales as well, and any artists interested in bringing down a few pieces for sale should note that in their submission e-mail. Business cards and postcards are also totally welcome. Our merch volunteers are fantastic, and we’ve been doing increasingly strong sales at each show.   Admission to the show is free, and we’ll have great musicians, DJ’s and surprises from 8pm to 4am, 21 and over with proper ID to get in, no exceptions. There will also be a $25 open bar from 8-11pm. The performers for the evening are nothing short of exceptional and the early submissions that we’ve received from some of you have been awesome. If you haven’t yet gotten in on this great opportunity for networking and artistic exposure, do so, and pass it on!   Thank you so much for your time, and I’m looking forward to seeing you all soon, one way or another!
