Souldish NYC Events On the Radar 9/27 - 10/3

EvanCalls for Art, Writiing: Diving Deeper, Spiritual Activism, Astro Drama, Psy Parties…This week New Yorkers have to really plan well. Saturday is crazy.  I’m going to at least 3 or 4 of these events on Saturday so say hello if you run into me.  Be sure to take a look at the upcoming events as well.  I add them in so you can get first dibs on tickets, so take advantage.  There’s so much to choose from between art parties and public exhibitions, public talks on meditation, psychedelics, astrology and spirituality, the STS9 after parties, 28th Day fun, writing and chocolate workshops and more.  Please tell your friends about our Souldish newsletter.  I wonder how many people actually use this newsletter to help them find interesting things to do.  I’d love to hear from you if you have any comments.

==========Call for Artists & Organizers for a Saturday,

September 29 Show=====

Theory Art Party: China1 Antique Lounge

Hello Wonderful Artists, Organizers, and Generally Cool People: Saturday September 29th, Theory’s putting on the Ritz for artcrime3:takeover(ture) , the latest in our series of scandalous mixed media mixers at the China1 Antique Lounge, located at 50 Avenue B between 3rd and 4th Streets. With an early kickoff and a really exciting performance lineup, this promises to be the best yet in a series of increasingly awesome art parties.   We’re accepting submissions for the show through Wednesday, September 26 at 8pm, and this is a hard deadline. We will finalize the show at 8:15pm on Wednesday the 26th. I know a number of artists already have pieces ready or submitted because of the absence of the open gallery last month, but I’d greatly appreciate it if you’d pass the word along to any artists whom you’d like to show with, as well as sending us some of your own pieces if you haven’t already. This should be the biggest and best art show as well as the biggest and best of our parties. The great people at the venue have been impressed enough with our parties to hire me on as a manager, and rest assured that I’m using my expanded resources as such to make Saturday the 29th a night to remember.  Submissions should be hi-res image files, preferably jpegs, captioned in-image with artist’s name and the work’s title. If you do not caption your works, you only will receive artist attribution on program sheets displayed throughout the venue, organized in order of appearance. Unless otherwise specified by the artist, submissions will used for digital display only and for one night only, Saturday September 29th, and will not be used by Theory Events or The Venue for any other purposes. All submissions should be e-mailed to theoryeventsnyc@gmail.com.  Please specify whether you’d allow us to use your art for promotional purposes in your submission e-mail. If you don’t say anything about
promotional purposes, then we won’t use it. If you let us use your art for promotional purposes, it will be attributed and shown to at least hundreds of people.  I urge any interested artists to submit at least five pieces for the show, and barring a total deluge of submissions, all works within reason and a fairly broad span of taste will be shown. We’ll have space at our merch table for zero-commission print sales as well, and any artists interested in bringing down a few pieces for sale should note that in their submission e-mail. Business cards and postcards are also totally welcome. Our merch volunteers are fantastic, and we’ve been doing increasingly strong sales at each show.   Admission to the show is free, and we’ll have great musicians, DJ’s and surprises from 8pm to 4am, 21 and over with proper ID to get in, no exceptions. There will also be a $25 open bar from 8-11pm. The performers for the evening are nothing short of exceptional and the early submissions that we’ve received from some of you have been awesome. If you haven’t yet gotten in on this great opportunity for networking and artistic exposure, do so, and pass it on!   Thank you so much for your time, and I’m looking forward to seeing you all soon, one way or another!

Yogic Longevity And Regeneration

The Indo-Tibetan yoga traditions have for centuries proposed that the practice of yoga and meditation could protect the tissues of the body from physical challenge, and even potentially lead to regeneration of new tissues and cells. In the last several years a virtual revolution has been occurring in the Western science of regeneration biology and medicine, and this contemporary scientific revolution may actually have initially unsuspected relevance to the ancient yogic traditions. Recently, evidence has been accumulating that many adult cells, tissues, and organs appear to possess a latent capacity to regenerate not previously recognized by modern Western science. There is preliminary evidence that such a latent capacity may be activated by yoga and meditation.  Neil Theise M.D., Professor of Pathology at Beth Israel/Albert Einstein Medical Center, discovered new adult stem cell lineages and processes, truly an historic scientific discovery. He has recently discovered what appears to be an anatomical link between the human nervous system and a stem cell compartment.  William Bushell, Ph.D. has been developing an original and innovative integrative scientific model of the potential of yoga and meditation to lead to regeneration of the body.

Dumbo Brooklyn Art Festival - Art Under the Bridge

Intricate art installations, open studios, night-time projections and musical and theatrical performances are among the many activities that make up this annual outdoor art festival, which spans over 30 blocks of Brooklyn’s trendy DUMBO district.
First held in 1997, the festival is organised by the Dumbo Arts Centre and showcases works of over 1500 established and emerging local and national artists.  Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass area (DUMBO) refers to the area located between the Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridges, which connect Brooklyn to Manhattan across the East River, and another which continues east from the Manhattan Bridge to the Vinegar Hill area. Historically a haven for artists, due to the relatively low-priced tenancies, recent renovation, which increased the number of trendy establishments, has resulted in an increasingly gentrified area.  “The Story of the Art Under the Bridge Festival and the story of Dumbo the neighborhood are inextricably contingent and both a phenomenon: each came out of nowhere. Born of a manufacturing wasteland in the late nineteen-nineties, both the Festival and neighborhood have evolved together. Each has been instrumental in shaping the other.  Since 1997, the annual Art Under the Bridge Festival has given Dumbo its indelible cultural cachet, while the waterfront’s post-industrial topography and extraordinary diversity of sites continue to inspire artists to create new public art works each year.  None of the above would be possible without the support of the artists who live/work here and the local residential and business community. From all at Dumbo Arts Center, we thank you for your good wit and goodwill, tolerance and enduring support, without which the Art Under the Bridge Festival would not be possible. To our visitors and patrons, we thank you for coming and urge you by way of the visual arts to explore an extraordinary neighborhood and by way of an extraordinary neighborhood to explore the visual arts.”   - Breda Kennedy, Executive Director.  Dumbo Arts Center’s Dumbo Art Under the Bridge Festival™ will take place this weekend from September 28 - 30, 2007 in Dumbo, Brooklyn. Over 150,000 people are expected to attend this art fest, which will feature 60 new art works scattered throughout the neighborhood while 158 private studios will be open to the public. Exhibitions will run in sixteen different venues. “The event is the single largest urban forum for experimental art in the United States that transforms the distinctive waterfront neighborhood into a multi-sensory public art arena.” Like the BKLYN Design show, this year’s theme will be green, with use of recycled materials and eco-conscious art.   Distinctively Dumbo: The One And Only, Once A Year, One Weekend Occupation Of A Neighborhood By Artists: Free, Accessible, Mood-enhancing, Sometimes Puzzling, Often Challenging, Captivating, Perplexing, Mischievous, Energizing, Can Be Funny, Never Boring, Total Immersion Visual Arts Experience, Where Art & Artists Invade Streets, Loading Docks, Lobbies, Sidewalks, Facades, River, Waterfront, Bathtubs, Elevators, Alleys, Corners, Storefronts, And Stores Plus The Video_dumbo Festival Of New Video Art, Scores Of Open Studios, And Multiple Exhibitions, All On A Curious Campus Spanning 27 Blocks Between The Manhattan And Brooklyn Bridges, From The Fulton Ferry Landing To Vinegar Hill, Known As Dumbo, Brooklyn, New York.  This is the event of the year in Dumbo and a chance for the public to meet and see all the galleries, stores, and street art/installations in one weekend. I hear there are a few surprises planned,  See the post on Dondi the artist elephant.  Dondi is adorable, for an elephant.

Sound Tribe Sector 9 After Party Featuring the Attic & Reckoning

The Attic will be performing at 1am Sunday morning at the Lion’s Den directly following Sound Tribe Sector 9 at the Nokia Theater in Times Square  “We are proud of each and every song on the album, and the pacing of it all from top to bottom…. It’s an indication of the value we place on group effort, the true meaning of a band… we wanted each track to use one another in order to paint a bigger picture, and I believe we achieved that,” says The Attic guitarist, Jordan Goldson, regarding The Attic’s debut recorded release entitled “In the Red.” Vocal harmony, raw guitar and percussive backbone pay tribute to songs such as the opening track “Wearing Thin,” and funk laden “Barking the Dog.” “In the Red” is planned to release the summer of 2007. The Attic, a four piece born and raised in the suburbs of the biggest little state in the country, Rhode Island, hatched in January of 2005. With hallowed venues such as The Stone Pony, Lupo’s Heartbreak Hotel and Manhattan’s Knitting Factory already under their belt, the band’s progression towards its raw and fearless live approach has taken shape with the integration of new found ambition and maturity gained through the recording process. The Attic [Joel Kovaks- drums, Tom Pellegrino- guitar/vocals, Phil Johnson- bass/vocals, Jordan Goldson- guitar/vocals] are best described as an improvisational rock band with unique talent. The music is original in its delivery. The Attic’s sound, while nothing short of positive, has a sole and undeniable sinister which lays contrast to a generalized happy-go-lucky sound of the jamband scene. With their debut album ready for release, The Attic will be supporting “In the Red” with performances along the east coast. For more information, tour dates, tix, free merchandise and cd samplers of the new release, visit The Attic’s official website at http://www.MusicFromTheAttic.com as well as their myspace page http://www.myspace.com/theatticusa.

Free Hugs NY City will meet again at Union Square Park South this Sunday at 3-3:30pm come and join a few progressive souls offering free hugs and share the love with your fellow humans. The groups founders came across “Juan Mann” on Youtube.com. He came up with this international group that shares the message of love through hugs. When they saw the “free hugs” video clips they were touched, if it can make anyone that may be having a tough day feel better then they are already a success. This is about solidarity as progressive people, as the next generation, as believers, as enlightened New Yorkers, this is about being inclusive to those that believe that our globalization is the way to solidarity. No rain date, no RSVP, please just show up, bring multiple freehug signs if possible.   Freehugsnycity will meet again at Union Square Park South the last Sunday of every month, 3-3:30 PM: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5lHjzGS6iq8topic

Reading: Norman Solomon “Made Love, Got War” In “Made Love, Got War: Close Encounters with America’s Warfare State,” Norman Solomon weaves insightful commentary on militarism and media warmongering with his experiences as an activist and journalist. His direct accounts of the U.S. peace movements over the past 40 years remind us of the inspired possibilities for disarmament not yet achieved. Solomon is the founder of the Institute for Public Accuracy, and is a longtime associate of Fairness & Accuracy In Reporting (FAIR). His previous books include “War Made Easy” and “Target Iraq.”

Event: ‘Creativity And Wisdom:Kongtrul Jigme Namgyel’   Free Public Talk

“When we trust our creativity we encounter a supreme kind of enjoyment.an amazement at the natural unfolding of life beyond our ordinary way of looking at things,” says abstract expressionist painter and Buddhist lama Kongtrul Jigme Namgyel. In this evening talk Mr. Namgyel will speak about the natural creativity that arises from our essential nature as human beings, and how the meditative process of letting go allows us to fully experience that natural vitality.   Kongtrul Jigme Namgyel’s training in the arts began at an early age with the practice of calligraphy, music, ritual dance and other traditional Tibetan arts. After his introduction to Western culture, he became increasingly interested in modern art, particularly abstract painting and the work of Picasso and Kandinsky. He began painting under the guidance of his teacher, Yahne Le Toumelin in the mid 1990’s. Ms. Le Toumelin, who is based in Dordogne, France, teaches a unique style of oil mixed with glue, applied with special palettes. Kongtrul values abstract painting as a complement to his meditative discipline. His training in abstract painting evolves directly from his training and experience in meditation. In the two years since his first exhibition, Light Coming Through (Taipei, 2005), his time spent engaged in meditation finds an on-going and active expression in his newest body of work, Natural Vitality. A life of retreat reflects in the work, and in turn, the work speaks of the value and importance of a life dedicated to cultivating wisdom. As he notes in his introduction, meditation and art share the same creative source. In that sense, his curriculum vitae as an artist is as much about his path as a meditator as his painting.   This is a Free Event, Space Is Limited. Please R.S.V.P.

Sheila Chandra w/GlobeSonic Sound System

The extraordinary vocalist Sheila Chandra makes her long awaited NYC debut, returning to live performance after a gap of 14 years. Chandra originally made her mark in the early 80’s as lead singer of the pioneering British Asian fusion band Monsoon, collaborating with Steve Coe. After Monsoon disbanded, Sheila signed with Coe’s’ s Indipop label in 1984 and went on to make her first four solo albums in two years. Sheila retired when she was 20 to take a sabbatical that lasted 4 years and re-emerged with her fifth solo album on Indipop. In 1991 Sheila decided to give concerts for the first time and developed her distinctive voice and drone approach drawing on vocal cultures from around the world so that she could perform alone on stage. From there, Chandra’s association with Real World Records began as she made 3 remarkable albums, “Weaving My Ancestors Voices” and “Speaking In Tongues” Parts 1 and II, seamlessly weaving Arab, Andalucian, Celtic and Indian vocal styles with even older traditions such as Gregorian plainsong into a true fusion within one mind and one voice. She also performed live for 2 years in the 90s, for the first and so far only time in her career until now. Chandra has sold over a quarter of a million albums, which has vindicated the riskiness of her approach. Don’t miss this extremely rare solo performance by a unique and innovative artist who posseses what has been called “one of the most beautiful voices on earth” (Billboard Magazine).  “Her music is a breath taking tapestry of uncommon beauty” (Chicago Tribune)   Drawing from a world of influence in their global-centric DJ sets, GlobeSonic Sound System redefine the lines between organic and digital, secular and sacred.

Sub Swara 2nd Anniversary Bash - East Coast, West Coast Soundclash

Yes Yes Fam! We’re back in NYC after an epic run up and down the west coast over the last few weeks. From the verdant sonic blauww!! of the Shambhala Music Festival to a proper family style bass bomb with our bredren crew, Surya Dub, in San Francisco (big up Maneesh the Twister, Kush Arora, Kid Kameleon, Ripley, roommate and all), and wrapping up most recently with a relentless and inspiring romp on the Burning Man Playa, we’re back in the Apple (check http://www.myspace.com/subswara in the near for pics, blogs, blurbs and blidgets), new and improved with big ‘tings lined up for our 2nd Birthday. So here it is… We’re celebrating our 2nd birthday with new beginnings and round 2 of an epic East-West Coast soundclash! After a year at Element, we’re thrilled to bits to be bringing Sub Swara to our new home and the most killer club soundsystem in New York City - LOVE (go to www.musicislove.net for limited advance discount tickets! ).  This one will be the 2nd coming of our bredren, the Glitch Mob and it’s going to be another epic face-off. In the home corner, the Sub Swara posse weighs in with the hard-hitting trio of Dhruva, Sunder, and Haj, heavy-weight MC Juakali and Pictureman & Skip Intro on visual attack. ‘Lo FreQuencY High Vibration Culture’ laced with live dubbed tablas, turntablism, Ragga vocals, and deep visual mixology. A barrage of genre defying sonics spanning crushing breaks, chubby dubstep, nasty grime, mid-tempo glitch, digi-dancehall, and much more big speaker biz. The SS crew has a grip of new tunes of the studio desk to drop on ya’ll!   In the visitors corner The Glitch Mob comes out swinging, as individual superstars edIT and Boretta join forces. These boys have been straight tearing up the circuit with their crunked-out glitch-injected hip-hop & lush IDM. Look out for edIT’s highly anticipated new album Certified Air Raid Material, out on Alpha Pup Records later this year.   Also appearing to open up the night will be special guest DJ Amar, from Electric Vardo SF. New venue, new (improved) soundsystem, new choonz, the Mob, ’nuff said….

====New NYC Spiritual Cinema Meetup Group=====

A wonderful new Meetup has been formed — The New York Spiritual Cinema Meetup! This group is dedicated to screening uplifting, positive films with a variety of profound and joyful spiritual themes: the oneness of humanity, the wisdom of non-violence, the power of love, and many others.  This group has been started by a kind and wise man who goes by the name of Robert Dyckman.   This is also a chance to meet other local Spiritual Cinema fans, and to discuss spiritually uplifting films and media programs dealing with the development of full human potential, nonviolent and healing resolutions of conflict, and the mysteries of Spirit. Come with an open mind and you’ll leave with a light heart filled with inspiration.  Sounds great, doesn’t it?  Many of these films will be screened privately. We’ll also go to see films in current release at local theatres.   This first meetup is already full.  However, I hope you’ll join Robert’s group so you’ll be on the list for future events.

=====Concrete Jungle Call for Volunteers=====

Concrete Jungle is a landmark opportunity for our community.  This is  the chance to introduce ourselves to the parks department and the city’s cultural institutions.  If we do a great job and show them  that we are joyful, creative, responsible and respectful people, it will open doors for us.  If a relationship of trust is established, the next time this happens, we will have more privileges and freedom.  Later hours, more space, bigger and riskier art,  recognition for our artists, etc.   Given this, we are going to need as many hands on deck for this Decom as possible.  Every little contribution is important.  An hour ofputting on wristbands, an hour of cleanup, making signs… there are many, many ways to help.  Many hands make light work.   One of Decom’s main themes is participation.  It’s not just because there’s work to be done.  There are rumors that this is part of the fun.  When you’ve invested effort into helping create something, it  changes the nature of the experience.  The more you put in, the more you get out.  There are many ways to volunteer and everyone should be able to work something out.  Before the event, during the event, after the event.  For two hours or a whole day.  Whatever works for you.  Your help is needed.  Volunteering is simple.  Just go to the link below.  Fill out the form and a coordinator will be in touch with you within a day or two and  bring you on the team.  There are still many jobs and positions available.  Please remember this is a Volunteering Call to Work, not a call for artists or performers.  http://www.brcnyc.com/decom/forms/volunteer.html  If you have emailed us already to volunteer, please, still, fill out the form so we can  account for everyone that wants to work.  It will take only a little bit of your time and  save us all alot of time in the long run.  There are some volunteers already for certain team leads and we know who you are and haven’t forgotten but this is the real official  call for volunteers so we can finish filling out the team.   We are going to have our first Decom meeting on Thursday, Sept 27th at 7pm  It will be brief.  We will introduce people to one another, match those who don’t know what they want to do with a group and  also give you a quick overview of everything we are dealing with.  I will send out the location info to those that volunteer or have volunteered when we have decided on a spot to meet.  Let’s all work together and make Decompression 2007 something that we  can be proud of.

=====NYC Decompression 2007 Call for Art & Content=====

This is a landmark year for Decompression. Decompression is teaming up with the Queens Museum of Art, a historic community-oriented arts institution, to showcase the brightest creative flames of NYC, the East Coast and beyond. More than any other year, this Decom will be about art. New York City has been the center of art world for the last hundred years. There is an unmatched quantity of places to see art and institutions dedicated to supporting them. However, oppressive rents, logistical nightmares in using spaces once they are found and a hypercompetitive and pretentious art industry threaten the creative future of New York City. Decompression is an opportunity to change this. This is a chance to build an art scene based around community and inclusion instead of price lists and elitism. The Concrete Jungle is no place for dour wine and cheese openings. The art of Decompression is visceral, exciting, interactive and celebratory.  If you have an art project, performance, theme camp, activity or any other creative work, please bring it to Decompression. Submit your project using the Participate forms at http://www.brcnyc.com/decom/ participate.html. Within a few days, a coordinator will get back to you. Please be patient. Coordinators are volunteers with a lot of work on their plates. They may have some more questions about your artwork. Try to answer them as completely as possible. If you’re not sure of something, such as exact electrical requirements or how much space something will take up, let them know.  If you have a theme camp or large project, in terms of space or general complexity, please be sure to have it submitted before Monday, October 15. All projects should be submitted before Monday, October 22. If your project has not been submitted by these deadlines, it may not be possible to accommodate them. Feel free to make submissions for projects that are not 100% certain or ask coordinators questions if you’re unsure. Use the Comments field of the form. It is better to give a heads up than wait until the last moment.  Art will be installed both inside the museum and in the park outside. Both spaces will be open for the entire event and have  electricity. However, there is limited space inside the museum.  Anything that will be installed inside the museum must have a very careful plan for setup and breakdown. Spots inside the museum will fill up quickly, so please submit early and mention your preference  in the comments field. Theme camps should assume that they will be set up outside. Flat visual art will be inside the museum, unless otherwise requested. Note that final placement will not occur until Monday, October 29.   If you have questions, please contact the appropriate coordinator, as listed below. If you’re not sure where to turn, you can emaildecom@brcnyc.com. Please do not email Decom team members directly with questions, even if they are your friends.
