Hi Everyone,  Hope you’ll come to this party fellow former GDers Elke, Jon Margulies and myself are working on.  It’s all about living out your dreams in NYC.

Drift through a labyrinth of rooms full of enchanted activities, glowing and pulsing artwork, exotic performers, magical chill caves, futuristic playgrounds, and endless spontaneity.  Featuring the city’s finest lucid dreamers, including globe-spanning DJs and devotional dancers, hula hoopers and healers, performers and poets, musicians and meditation masters and that big bold playful dreamer — You!  Evolvitorium, 8:30p: “Asanas and Ayahuasca” In this talk Sharon Gannon (cofounder of Jivamukti Yoga) and Reality Sandwich’s Daniel Pinchbeck (author of 2012: The Return of Quetzalcoatl) compare and contrast yoga and shamanism and how these ancient techniques might just save our world today.  This is the first in a series of freakishly fun experiments from Reality Sandwich. Spiritual Cinema Meetup:  Let Your Imagination Set You Free - “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly”

If you’d enjoy the true story of a man who took an adversity beyond all imagining and transformed it into a testament to the irrepressible human urge to love, create and dream - you’ve gotta come.   Why?  You’ll love it because it’s emotionally compelling, astonishingly lyrical, and profoundly moving.  Expected Attendees:  13 people — 13 Yes, 0 Maybe; There’s still room for 12 more.   The Diving Bell and the Butterfly looks fantastic. And it’s being hailed by critics as the Best Movie of the Year. This is an absolute must-see! Nominated for 3 Golden Globes including Best Picture, here’s just a few quotes from the reviews: “Emotionally compelling and visually sumptuous.”   Online tickets are finally available for the 11th.  We’ll meet in the lobby at 6:30pm and go to the theater to get seats no later than 6:45pm.After the film we’ll either grab some seats right there at the Angelika Cafe or go to a nearby spot to eat and drink and talk about the film. We had a really great time with “The Golden Compass” - so I look forward to watching and discussing this extraordinary film with you!  Below is a description of the film, but check out the website, too for the trailer and more! (www.thedivingbellandthebutterfly-themovie.com)  From one of the most emotionally exhilarating and luminous bestsellers ever written comes the true story of a man who took an adversity beyond all imagining and transformed it into a testament to the irrepressible human urge to love, create and dream. With his third film, director and artist Julian Schnabel (?Basquiat,? ?Before Night Falls?) forges a visually stunning, heart-stirring ode to what drives a man to go on when all truly seems lost. Through a mesmerizing blast of color, beauty and humor, and a rousing spirit of creativity, Schnabel tells the story of Jean-Dominique Bauby (Mathieu Amalric, ?Munich?), AKA ?Jean-Do,? the high-flying editor of French Elle and father of two, who was renowned for his sense of humor and style, his joie de vivre and amorous energy, when, in an instant, his world was plunged into the depths of catastrophe.  Faced with a harrowing predicament, Jean-Do will use enormous courage and determination but, most of all, his soaring imagination to escape from his trap. Tapping into the limitlessness of his memories, fantasies, wit and wishes, he finds a way to race through experiences of wonder and grief, sex and love, fatherhood and childhood, faith and questioning, ecstasy and absurdity ? and touches the very essence of what it is to be human. Along the way he is buoyed by a quintet of remarkable women: Céline (Emmanuelle Seigner), the mother of his children who remains devoted to him despite his betrayal; Inés (Agathe de la Fontaine), the girlfriend who still haunts him; Henriette (Marie-Josée Croze) and Marie (Olatz Lopez Garamendia), who give Jean-Do the power to re-connect with the world and his loved ones; and Claude (Anne Consigny), who becomes his ravishing literary assistant. Legendary screen star and Oscar® nominee Max Von Sydow takes the moving role of Jean-Do?s father. The cast of leading French stars also includes Patrick Chesnais, Niels Arestrup, the late Jean-Pierre Cassel and Marina Hands.  ?The Diving Bell and the Butterfly? is directed by Julian Schnabel, who garnered the Director?s Award at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival for the film, and is written by Academy Award® winner Ronald Harwood (?The Pianist?), based on the internationally acclaimed memoir by Jean-Dominique Bauby. The producers are Kathleen Kennedy and Jon Kilik and the executive producers are Pierre Grunstein and Jim Lemley.  Shot entirely on location in France, Jean-Do?s extraordinary, dream-like world, a world seen literally through the blink of an eye, is brought to life by an artistic team that includes two-time Academy Award®-winning cinematographer Janusz Kaminski (?Schindler?s List,? ?Saving Private Ryan,? ?Munich?), production designers Laurent Ott and Michel Eric, costume designer Olivier Beriot and composer Paul Cantelon, whose score is woven into a soundtrack compiled by Schnabel with tracks from artists including Tom Waits, U2, Lou Reed and Joe Strummer, as well as samples of classic movie scores.

We’ll meet in the lobby at 6:30p and go to the theater to get seats no later than 6:45p.

Derrick May

For the dance-music-minded in New York, underground, smaller-room affairs are often the norm. But on occasion, an epic night out is in order, and this most definitely fits the bill. Detroit techno innovator Derrick May takes to the decks at the ever-hedonistic Pacha, complete with heavy sound system (in capable hands) and amped-up crowd.  Derrick May is a friend of mine so of course I am biased.

New York Center for Kripalu Yoga & Health presents:  Stoking the Fire:  The Transcendental Power of Prana With popular senior Kripalu teacher Dean Hudson

Explore the body’s powerful and subtle energy beyond the brief pranayama excercises in most yoga classes.  Spiritual practitioners have long recognized the interdependence between the mind and prana, the vital life force of the body. The ancient yogis exploited this relationship by working directly with prana to cultivate deep meditative states.  In this workshop, we will explore this relationship by stoking the pranic fire in the body through an intense synthesis of asana, pranayama, kumbhaka (breath retention) and the bandhas (locks). Learn how this integrated practice can facilitate energetic attunement, raise the store of energy in the body, and lead to transcendent states. Please eat very lightly before class.  Dean Hudson, L.I.C.S.W., Director of Pathways to Wholeness, is a psychotherapist and professional-level Kripalu Yoga teacher and mentor. He is on the 500-hour Yoga Teacher Training staffs at both Kripalu Center and Pranakriya Yoga in North Augusta, SC headed by Yoganand Michael Carroll. He brings a deeply meditative and spiritual style of teaching to all his work and leads programs nationwide. He is the creator of the CDs Meditation and the Transformation of Consciousness and TheHealing Power of Relaxation.  Make check payable to NY Kripalu Yoga for $60.  Mail to:  Allen Neff, 10 Waterside Plaza, #28D, NY, NY 10010
