The Music of Zikrayat: Timeless Traditions from Egypt and Iraq

Zikrayat will be performaing at Joe’s Pub.  followed by by Safaafir–part of the Brooklyn Maqam festival.  We’ll be doing a classical vocal/instrumental set, (no dancers, but great music!), featuring songs from Golden-Era Egyptian Films as performed by Farid el-Atrash, Abdel-Halim Hafiz, Esmahan, Umm Kulthum,  and Hurriyya Hassan, plus some instrumental and original pieces.  Featuring:  Gaida, Vocals.  Salah Rajab, Vocals.  Sami Abu Shumays, Violin; Tareq Abboushi, Buzuq; Dimitri Mikelis, Oud.  & Melodica; Johnny Farraj, Percussion; Nikolai Ruskin, Percussion.  Timeless Traditions from Egypt and Iraq Zikrayat, led by Sami Abu Shumays, plays a classical repertoire from the Golden Age of Egyptian cinema, and Safaafir, led by Amir ElSaffar,revives the classical urban vocal tradition of Iraqi maqam.  Brooklyn Arts Council (BAC) presents this program as part of its month-long festival BROOKLYN MAQAM ARAB MUSIC FESTIVAL. This concert is supported by a grant from Baisley Powell Elebash Fund.  About Zikrayat: Zikrayat (”memories” in Arabic) is a New York based ensemble of musicians and dancers dedicated to presenting the traditional repertory of Arabic music, song and dance. In addition to the well know standard repertory, Zikrayat highlights little-known gems from the “golden age” of Egyptian cinema, as well as original compositions. With a classical Takht lineup of oud, nay, violin, qanun, riqq, tabla, and vocals, in addition to folk instruments like buzuq, mizmar, and rabba, Zikrayat’s musicians capture the original spirit of the music. Zikrayat’s dancers focus on authentic Egyptian Raqs Sharqi, especially as embodied by such legends as Naima Akif and Samia Gamal.

Ruth invites you to the Vernal Equinox launch of Harlan Emil Gruber’s TRANS PORTALS project featuring presentations and DJ performances.  The celebration takes place during a Full Moon illuminating the transformational journey to the Winter Solstice of 2012.  Cultural critic Lisa Paul Streitfeld’s presentation Trans Portals to 2012 interprets the interactive art Harlan Emil Gruber created for the Burning Man Festival in the context of the 2012 evolutionary shift.  The artist will speak on the sacred geometry of his Portals and introduce his latest project Structure of the Vacuum based on the cutting edge physics of Nassim Haramein.  DJ’s Sheldon Drake (Baltimore), Dr. Decent (Boulder) and Lloop (Vienna) return to New York City to perform for this event.
