The Promised Land (The decadent choice)

A Twenty Four Hour Adventure of Myth + Mischief + Masquerade Made Exquisitely Out-of-Control  Recently the headlines have been dire, our nation is in flux and with the inauguration of new leadership is still too far away. The best we can hope for is a temporary reprieve. This is it. Join us, Friday, October 31st in the Promised Land. This three part event will unfold over an epic twenty four hours, beginning with a renegade street parade, climaxing in a classic all-night warehouse festival and winding out with an extended after-party in a cozy Brooklyn loft.

These are things we should not do.

Part I : The Pilgrimage : It starts in the street just after the Manhattan Halloween parade, with stilts, champagne, rose petals, march bands, art floats and sincere moments of awe shared with you and two thousands friends.

Part II : The Kingdom : A classic deep-Brooklyn party in a massive 112 year old warehouse of towering steal and brick. This is a space you haven’t seen before. Expect the epic. Featuring performances by dj’s Justin Carter, Kimyon, The Twilight Tone, Zemi 17, Wolf + Lamb; plus live music from hip-hop pioneer Melle Mel, The Dolemites, the twenty piece Candombe Carnival Drum Troop; and live acts of fire, aerial performance and circus stunts by: The Lady Circus, Hydrogen Jukebox and much more…

Part III : Eternity : A cozy after-party with music, brunch and a sauna for the weary. To make it to Eternity, you must earn your way in.

Full details of the party will be released next week. This message is a call to participate.  Your friends are the most brilliant people you know and this is your chance to prove it. In the mix of the costumed menagerie that will be The Promised Land, we are looking for seven “tribes” to compete in acts of daring and humility to win a coveted prize. This is one part synchronized costume competition and one part talent exhibition hosted on stage and throughout the party on October 31st.

Submit your tribe at http://thedanger.com/tribes to participate. Participate: http://thedanger.com/tribes

Deepening the Shamanic Experience with Itzhak Beery at the Open Center

This “mini-apprenticeship” is for those who have had some exposure to shamanism and some experience of journeying into non-ordinary states but who wish to go deeper, either to make shamanism part of their daily practice or to add its age-old healing methods to their repertoire of healing practices. We will explore rituals and practices from several traditions, including those of the Ecuadorian Quechua and of the Brazilian Amazon; shamanic journeying to the upper, middle and lower worlds; the role of power animals and teachers; the use of huachas (sacred items); how to set up and properly use a sacred altar from which to draw power; chants and the role of music in healing; shamanic divination; the development of intuition; healing techniques; and, most importantly, how to protect oneself from negative energies. Weekly homework will be given.  Note: Bring drums and/or rattles if you have them, as well as eye coverings, a blanket, a journal and a pen. Sage will be burned in class.  Itzhak Beery is a NYC-based shamanic healer who conducts shamanic workshops in the U.S., Israel and Hawaii. He trained intensively with the Ecuadorian Quechua, Shuar, Uru-eu-wau-wau and other South American indigenous shamans, and is a co-founder of the NY Shamanic Circle. Yoga and Vegetarianism by Sharon Gannon – Book Launch Party

Please join us as we celebrate the publication of this important new book. Among other treats, Sharon will do a reading of excerpts from the book, followed by a book signing and a gathering in our Jivamuktea Vegan Cafe.   “Through the practices of yoga, we discover that concern for the happiness and well-being of others, including animals, must be an essential part of our own quest for happiness and well-being. The fork can be a powerful weapon of mass-destruction or a tool to create peace on Earth.”  –Sharon Gannon.  In Yoga and Vegetarianism, our beloved teacher, Sharon Gannon, presents the novel and innovative argument that the rationale for vegetarianism goes beyond the yogic precept of non-harming (ahimsa).  Sure, Ahimsa is a no-brainer.  But how could brahmacharya -sexual continence- be related to vegetarianism?  Sharon answers that question and more in a provocative, engaging and at times humorous exploration as she explains how the five yamas (ethical precepts) of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras - non-harming, truthfulness, non-stealing, sexual continence and greedlessness- compel the committed yogi to adopt a vegetarian lifestyle. Sharon’s argument expands your capacity for living your yoga.    (You will receive the book as you check into the event.)

We will create a ritual group-healing circle based on the “Machitun”, the healing ways of the “Mapuche” shamans of Chile. This circle connects us with our Sacred Self, the Earth, and Great Spirit, inspiring a collective and personal healing in a trance state using drums, dancing, chanting and sacred sounds. All participants will play an active role in the ceremony through learning the earth dances, the drumming rhythms used to induce and maintain the trance state, and the songs which honor the Mother and the Spirit within. All are welcome!
