Healing with Bowls - Crystal Sounds at CoSM

Join us for an evening of Sound at the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors Thursday December 4th.  It is the opportunity to feel yourself energized and vibrating at a higher frequency, merging with the Sacred Sound of the Crystal Bowls. Experiencing Scared Space, and letting the Healing take place.  Sound (the word) is the original creational tone. Everything is made up of energy at various frequencies. All things in nature vibrate to sound, light and color. Sound frequencies effect everything about us. The correct vibrational frequencies can be used to heal and balance our bodies.  Sound healing is the practice of using sound to realize and correct imbalances in the body. Sound healing works on the belief that the human body is not solid. Rather it is energy that is held together by sound. Any disease therefore indicates that some sound has gone out of tune.  Sound travels through our body, touching the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual, calling to remembrance our natural state of harmony.  Journey with the sound of crystal bowls with Philippe Garnier.

Please bring a blanket or yoga mat.

Reality Sandwich presents…

Sneak Preview: “Footsteps in Africa: A Nomadic Journey”

Discussion with Director Kathi von Koerber,  Editor CC Treadway and Composer Jamshied Sharifi

Catch a sneak preview of an exquisite cinematic journey followed by a discussion with the film’s director Kathi von Koerber, its editor CC Treadway, and composer Jamshied Sharifi.  “Footsteps in Africa, a Nomadic Journey” is a documentary, witnessing the colorful music of the daily life and ritualistic survival of the Saharan desert nomads of Mali. The Tuareg / Kel Tamashek relate their nomadic quest for freedom, their pursuit for oneness with life, and their integration of encroaching modern ways into their tradition of life. For thousands of years their survival reveals the innate wisdom of living as one with nature in the desert, allowing them to survive beyond droughts and their rebellions. Shot on 24P Video ,16 mm and interlaced with still  photography, the  film expresses the power of music, its frequencies, and the Tuareg’s courage, strength and willingness to face death.

Meditation for the People Workshop

Come support my friend Adam in his new “Meditation for the People” workshop Saturday, November 29th frpm 2-4pm at East/West Yoga (14th Street and 5th Avenue). We will explore the landscape of meditation philosophies and techniques while learning about the everyday scientific/health benefits of meditation. And of course, we will practice meditating together along the way.  By the end of this workshop, each student will have established their own life-long personal meditation practice and philosophy, chosen individually from the wealth of information, philosophies, and practice techniques.  Traditionally meditation has been reserved for eastern religions, monasteries, and ashrams, or for those who could afford expensive meditation schools. But ever since scientific studies have proven the medical benefits of meditation, and have even linked public meditation to decreased crime rates, the practice of meditation is now available to anyone interested in healthy living. The truth is that meditation is healing and helpful for anyone, anytime, regardless of religion or belief. By calming our minds and learning to center within, we take an active role in creating peace on earth (which is a goal most of us share, especially around the upcoming Holidays!).

Witness: Photographers, Journalists, and Social Workers Respond to Tragedy

You are cordially invited to a panel discussion jointly sponsored by the Open Society Institute Documentary Photography Project, the Columbia University School of Social Work, and the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma.  Unlike social workers or therapists—the witnesses of the helping professions—journalists and photographers function mainly to inform, interpret and bridge rather than to help directly.  Documentary photographers can inspire understanding and compassion with their images and can contribute to opening paths to assistance.   Yet, there are pitfalls and ethical challenges when documenting stories about communities or individuals who have been through traumatic experiences.

This panel will explore ways to strengthen the impact of documentary practice, sharing knowledge and practices of inclusion across disciplines.  Panelists Bruce Shapiro, Executive Director, the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma (moderator) Grace Christ, Professor, Columbia University School of Social Work Donna DeCesare, Photographer and Associate Professor, University of Texas School of Journalism Jack Saul, Assistant Professor of Clinical Population and Family Health, Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health DeCesare’s exhibition Sharing Secrets: Children’s Portraits Exposing Stigma is part of the Moving Walls 12 photography exhibition organized by the Open Society Institute and is currently on display at the Columbia School of Social Work. The Right to Write with Julia Cameron

What if everything we’ve learned about writing is wrong? In this class, drawing from her groundbreaking best-seller The Right to Write, Julia Cameron dismantles the mythology surrounding the writing life in our culture. Tackling such issues as time, mood, inspiration and support, she reveals that writing is, in fact, a natural—and crucial—part of life. Questions of how, when and why yield to the virtual toolkit of strategies and tips that she provides in this class.  Whether we are jumping into the writing life for the first time or have already been living it, we will never be the same after encountering Julia Cameron. Join this uniquely inspiring teacher as she shares her insights, leads us in group exercises, answers our questions, and shares powerful techniques to awaken the graceful, fluid writer lying dormant in all of us.  Julia Cameron is the author of 25 books of fiction and nonfiction, including The Artist’s Way, Walking in this World, The Vein of Gold, The Right to Write, The Sound of Paper and, most recently, Mozart’s Ghost. =====Noteworthy=====

Hello people - I have a quick favor I’d like to ask to the thousands of people on the mailing list. Many of you are artists, writers, musicians, creatives, and many of you know that over the last couple of years I’ve toured my live “remix” of D.W. Griffith’s infamous Birth of a Nation film around the world. I’d like to invite you to participate in a unique experiment: Would you host a screening of my new film in your hometown and invite friends over to check out the new project? Details below:

in peace,
Paul aka Dj Spooky

During Black History Month in February 2009, we would like to help grassroots organizations in cities across America screen Rebirth of a Nation.  In light of this year’s historic election, it is difficult to acknowledge that not even 100 years ago, D.W. Griffith’s propaganda film Birth of a Nation, that sympathetically portrayed the rise of the KKK in the post-Civil War South, was screened in the White House, and judged by President Wilson to be “like writing history with lightning.”  On Election Day, 2008, Anchor Bay Films/Starz Media released on DVD Paul Miller’s (aka DJ Spooky That Subliminal Kid) Rebirth of a Nation, a film that began as a live remix project in which Griffith’s film was dissected, deconstructed, and reformed. The DVD features an original score by Paul performed by Kronos Quartet.  The tremendous energy generated by the mobilization of grassroots organizations in America influenced the outcome of this year’s elections. It is an opportune time for the same organizations to take stock of recent history and target the socio-political conflicts that still exist and are referenced in Rebirth of a Nation.  The plan is simple: you think up a plan for your community to view the film. Locate a venue with enough space to screen the film and enough time to host a discussion afterwards. (This might be a local gallery, or student center, or even your own living room.) Think about who you will invite, and how. The first respondent in every city to come back to us with a plan, will host the screening in his or her city, and will have our help in publicizing the event.

Learn more about the film at http://www.djspooky.com or http://www.rebirthofanation.com.
