Uzi’s Open Mic at Tribes Gallery
Every Thursday, performers of all ranges and mediums are invited to read poetry, play music, dance, do comedy, show off art, tell a story, recite a monologue, anything. For a donation, you can witness history and art at the same time. Every performer gets 6 minutes to sparkle. Uzi’s Open comes from the school of open mics that was started by Reverend Jen Miller, author of “I Did it For Science” and Faceboy aka Francis Hall almost 15 years ago. Both of these artists created a safe place for other artists and audience members to connect and inspire each other. Faceboy started this tradition in the Lower East Side and kept it going fiercely for 14 years, Reverend Jen, who coined the name “Art Star” ran her amazing show, The Anti-Slam, for 13 years. Uzi’s Open will continue with this tradition in support of artists and other incredible open mics like The O’debra Twins Show N Tell at Bowery Poetry Club, and Steph Sabelli’s Sunday Open Mic. This is a byob event so, bring whatever food or drink you desire.

Here Comes Trouble…A New Generation of Global Music
Here comes trouble, indeed. Trouble with coloring inside the strict lines of a single genre, or sticking to the traditions of one place, no matter how wonderful. The next generation of global musicians is undeniably individualist in how they remix and transform age-old sounds and current pop conventions. Defying simple categories of place and identity, this new breed of “world” artist is stirring up a whole new kind of trouble in artistic hot spots like Brooklyn. San Francisco agency Trouble Worldwide and the New York Label Barbès Records have teamed up to present six groups that leap borders and continents with a single musical bound. Performers include Gokh-Bi System, La Rubias Del Norte, Cordero, Hazmat Modine, Karsh Kale and Slavic Soul Party. Gokh-Bi System Sounds like: The Roots hanging with Baaba Maal, La Rubias Del Norte Sounds like: Mozart doing the cha cha cha, Cordero Sounds like: Cat Power channeling Juana Molina, Hazmat Modine Sounds like: Brother Where Art Thou on steroids, Karsh Kale Sounds like: Herbie Hancock and Zakir Hussain lay down break beats, Slavic Soul Party Sounds like: New Orleans brass band jams with Macedonian gypsies. Schedule: 8:00 pm - Gokh-Bi System; 8:45 pm - La Rubias Del Norte; 9:30 pm - Cordero; 10:15 pm - Hazmat Modine; 11:00 pm - Karsh Kale; 11:45 pm - Slavic Soul Party.

Lucid NYC
Lucid NYC is charting a course to a more enlightened world. What we do is designed to create a new societal conversation; one that has depth and meaning. Lucid NYC will be the living room you always wish you had, pre-filled with fascinating people. With that in mind, we’re scaling back to the essentials. Like always, we will have great presenters. For example, for the next event, we have the eco-style innovator Graham Hill, founder of Treehugger.com and Discovery Channel’s Planet Green; futurist Sem Devillart talking about predicting visual trends; and a couple others who who we’ll announce shortly. But everything else will be scaled back: the new venue is a spacious and charmingly imperfect Chelsea loft with many sofas that may have been found curbside. No more rows of seats. No more formal bar. It’s byob and F (food) (there’ll be plenty of both to start people off). We don’t want to sell you anything. The goal is to create a comfortable environment to generate conversation. [Note: we will still be charging $10 because, well, we need to cover overhead that is in excess of $600. It’s still way cheaper than getting a loft of your own. So please come on January 15th. Settle in and make it your own. And, as always, shoot me presenter suggestions, or any input as to how Lucid NYC could achieve its end better. And sign up for the Facebook group to rsvp. See you soon. Lucid NYC initiates events—events that are, in short, parties with presentations. There is a structured part of the evening with several 12 minute presentations or performances; this is followed by an informal part, whereby you can engage–or “party”–with the speakers and other people in the crowd. Why presentations at a party? Just as the experience of going to a bar or club is informed and established by loud music and a focus on alcohol, the Lucid NYC experience is informed and established by our presenters and their presentations. While the former experience distances people from one another, ours draws people closer together. Lucid NYC believes the new world will not be created in a space where you need to shout to the person standing next to you but through conversation and involvement in one another’s lives, work and passions. And since our world demands that we face manifold challenges and issues, our presenters are never restricted to one topic or ideology. We give space to myriad topics, from architecture to anarchy (see presenter profiles). If you have a presentation you’d like to submit, Lucid NYC would like to hear about it. Please email the details. Be sure to include your phone number and the best time to call. Food/drink: light snacks, wine, and water will be available. BYOB’s are welcome. Next Event: January, 15th 2009. Doors open 6:30, presentations begin at 8:00.

National Landscape Conservation System
With its treasure trove of archeological sites, windswept slickrock and twisting red rock canyons, the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in south-central Utah is an awe-inspiring place. Little wonder, then, that it was the first national monument set aside as part of the National Landscape Conservation System, specifically to protect the area in its natural state. But a proposed federal plan for this area could irreparably alter the Grand Staircase-Escalante. The plan calls for relaxed restrictions on “chaining,” the practice of dragging a chain between two bulldozers to scrape off trees and shrubs; and new motorized use on up to 1,000 miles of routes within fragile areas. You can help. Since this proposal is still in draft form, there’s a good chance that it will be finalized under the Obama administration. That’s all the more reason why the BLM needs to hear that the Grand Staircase must be protected as a spectacular natural area that will be cherished by many generations of Americans. Please hurry - comments must be submitted by this Thursday, January 8!
