Rocaterrania

Rocaterrania film screening - a documentary about outsider artist Renaldo Kuhler.  Rocaterrania is a feature length documentary exploring the secret world of scientific illustrator and visionary artist Renaldo Kuhler.  This screening is presented by Phantasmaphile.  In the last four decades, seventy-six-year-old Renaldo Kuhler has created hundreds of plates for the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, illustrating diverse flora and fauna for obscure scientific journals and reference books. Before the making of this documentary, no one knew that Kuhler is also a prolific visionary artist - and the creator of an entire imaginary world called Rocaterrania.  Rocaterrania is a tiny nation of eastern European immigrants who purchased a tract of land along the Canadian border - just north of the Adirondack Mountains in New York - after growing restless with America’s notions of “democracy.”  Over the next six decades, Rocaterrania saw two revolutions and the rise and fall of a succession of czars, dictators, and presidents among a cast of characters vaguely resembling Russian historical figures. But, as the film reveals, each change in government reflects a deeper meaning for Renaldo, an outsider who struggled to escape an emotionally abusive family and searched for freedom within a real nation threatened by forces of conformity.  Rocaterrania unveils Kuhler’s astounding body of work to the world and reveals the powerful story of his life in the process.  Among other themes, the film is about the insidious nature of conformity, the courage to be one’s true self, and the redemptive power of artistic creation.  Featuring an eclectic original score by Merge Records recording artists Shark Quest.  Rocaterrania is directed by Brett Ingram and released by Bright Eye Pictures.

Mukti Man -  Intro to the Yoga Lifestyle for Men: Yoga workshop + Dinner

With Matthew Lombardo and Jai Sugrim, both 800 hour certified Jivamukti Yoga teachers lead this dynamic workshop which de-mystifies the world of yoga for Men.  During the 2.5 hour yoga workshop they will cover yoga asana, strict Vinyasa, inversions (handstand, fore-arm stand, etc.), and include a specific hip opening section that will be taught in a slowed down format that students can “take-away” with them and practice at home.  Following the asana portion of the workshop Matt and Jai will do a talk that covers the benefits of yoga for men and speak about the proper code of behavior a man should possess in a predominantly female populated studio. They will also teach men how to apply yogic principles to positively affect their relationships with women.  After the talk a vegetarian dinner will be served in the Jivamuktea Cafe where the boys will discuss the benefits of a yogic diet and how vegetarianism can increase one’s focus, clarity and health. Then there will be an open mic Q and A session where attendees  can have any questions about yoga answered by two of yoga’s “Guy-Guys.”  This workshop is great for men who: want to utilize yoga asanas for cross-training; . want to learn how to open their tight hips; . want to apply yogic principles towards improving their relationships with women; . want to gain comfort in a yoga studio whose practitioners are predominantly female; . want to use yoga to be more balanced and energized at work; want to learn how to use a yogic diet for increased focus and health

Huun-Huur-Tu Throat-Singing Workshop and Concert

NY Shamanic Circle presents a rare opportunity, up close and personal…Special events with the famous Tuvan group.  Throat-singing, is a powerful sound system of spiritual development, health improvement and rejuvenation, based on ancient Tuvan shamanic tradition. It connects with Spirit of Highest Power and is both magical and practical, developing your deep breathing, and higher spiritual alignment using vibrational sound. Learn exercises for the development of your voice, energy and body, to create a direct transformational experience. For those of you already experienced in throat-singing techniques, you can broaden your scope to learn and practice with most famous Tuvan masters of this ancient art form.  In an intimate setting, Huun Huur Tu the Tuvan most famous group will perform rarely heard indigenous music, which will marvel you with their ancient healing sounds. Do not miss this opportunity.  “Throat-singing music comes to us from the time before language,” explains Huun-Huur-Tu co-founder, Sayan Bapa. “This is why it is so difficult to find words to describe its beauty.”  “A sonic marvel, throat singing cannot be described, it simply must be heard,” agrees the Boston Globe. “And Huun-Huur-Tu…are among the most renowned in this ancient vocal style.”  Huun-Huur-Tu come from the former Soviet Autonomous Republic of Tuva, a sparsely settled region of grasslands, boreal forests, and mountain ridges that is the birthplace of shamanism. This indigenous music highlights rare instruments and preserves what is arguably some of the world’s oldest form of music making. The best known genre of Tuvan music, xöömei (khoomei, throat-singing), comprises what one might call a lexicon of musical onomatopoeia in which natural sounds are mimetically transformed into musical representations.  Visit Huun-Huur-Tu site: http://www.hhtmusic.com.  Important: Informal seating, please bring a pillow to sit on. This is also a “shoes off” sacred space.  A reservation is a MUST. Limited room available (only for the first 40 people, with waiting list).  If attending our Friday’s Open Circle (tonight Feb 12th), you can sign-up in person to be first on the list for these events, and can bring your check or cash payment then to reserve your space.

The Bike Trip

The Bike Trip - A true, comic monologue about peddling chemical truths; Created & performed by Martin Dockery.  In a quest to understand why LSD has for so long both enthralled and terrified so many millions of people, I journey through the psychedelic scenes of San Francisco, Goa, and Basel, where an attempt to replicate history’s first ever acid trip has me encountering more than just its inventor’s home.  Five Shows:  2/25 Thur @ 10:30pm; 2/27 Sat @ 4:00pm; 3/3 Wed @ 6:00pm; 3/5 Fri @ 7:00pm; 3/7 Sun @ 2:30pm.  The public perception of LSD is frozen in a 1960s tie-dyed haze, and yet its use is as prevalent - and as secretive - as ever. The Bike Trip tells a very personal tale as it attempts to look anew at this most powerful of all psychotropic substances.  I’ll be touring with The Bike Trip (and Wanderlust) for 4 straight months to Fresno, Phoenix, Orlando, Charleston, London, Regina, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Edmonton, Victoria, and Vancouver - so catch the show while it’s all-too-briefly here in NYC!  Thanks. Hope to see you all soon. And in the meantime, let’s have a good time, now, every single one of us.  -Martin
