Introduction to Transition - April 22-25
Thursday, 7 pm - Sunday, 4 pm with Michael Brownlee, Lynette Marie Hanthorn, & Seanna Ashburn. This program provides a comprehensive overview of the Transition model for decreasing oil dependency and building local resilience – its premises and practices, along with an experiential introduction to the “head, heart, and hands” of Transition. Michael Brownlee and Lynette Marie Hanthorn, co-founders of Transition Colorado, will be leading this weekend for the third time, joining Genesis Farm staff member Seanna Ashburn. All three are certified Transition trainers for the international Transition Network. The Transition movement makes “no claim to have all the answers,” states Lynette Marie, “but by building on the wisdom of the past and accessing the pool of ingenuity, skills, and determination in our communities, the next steps can readily emerge.” We live in a time of transition – movement into the Ecozoic Era, as Thomas Berry has called it. Signs are increasingly apparent: Peak oil, climate unpredictability, and economic instability. David Korten, author of The Great Turning: From Empire to Earth Community, says that “We’re in for enormous disruption, no matter what. The question is how we deal with it and ameliorate its worst effects.” How are we to live into such a moment with intention and hope? How can we act on our commitment to life and the common good? The Transition movement has emerged over the last five years with both practical and principled responses to these questions. A network of locally-focused Initiatives, the Transition movement supports local leadership efforts to engage people in taking the far-reaching actions required to mitigate the effects of peak oil, climate change and the economic crisis, and in building greater community resilience and more fulfilling social connections. This community-wide Transition model for creating ‘energy descent pathways’ has spread around the world. Over 250 officially designated Transition Initiatives now exist in 15 countries, with 50 in the U.S. and hundreds more implementing the Transition model in varying degrees.
If you are unable to attend this April Introduction to Transition weekend, we are offering another one on September 16-19.

Weaving Connections between Transition & Permaculture
A Workshop for Community Transformation - April 27-30; Tuesday, 2 pm – Friday, 3 pm. with Peter Bane & Michael Brownlee. The objective of this workshop is to provide Transition leaders and Permaculture practitioners a new and dynamic framework for integrating their community building work. We will emphasize practical guidelines, tools, and processes that incorporate Permaculture analysis and action with the cultural transformation stimulated by Transition. The Transition and Permaculture movements together are providing a transformational response to the crisis of industrial civilization. While the Transition process is deeply rooted in Permaculture ethics and principles, there has been little explicit integration between the two at the level of language and practice. As a system of design, Permaculture provides a new vocabulary for observation and action, a framework that generates pattern languages for every region, community, and site. Participants will probe into the practical integration of Transition and Permaculture through the visionary precepts of “Pattern Language” developed by Christopher Alexander, emeritus professor of architecture at the University of California-Berkeley. His ideas form the basis of a deep revision of The Transition Handbook now in progress by Rob Hopkins and other leaders of the international Transition Network. With this understanding, participants will be able to more consciously empower their communities to achieve resilience and self-reliance. Workshop leaders Peter Bane and Michael Brownlee bring a depth of experience and understanding in their respective fields which will lay the groundwork for participants to explore together this revolutionary pathway to community transformation. “Every step of the process must unfold in such a way as to heal the community… The process is a single process because it has only one aim: quite simply, to produce wholeness, everywhere.” Christopher Alexander, A New Theory of Urban Design (For more information, see http://www.patternlanguage.com.)
Cost: $300 before April 1; $350 thereafter.
Meals: $72 (3 dinners, 3 lunches)
Limited lodging: $50 per night (includes breakfast).

Environmental Projects matched to volunteers and funds
Do you have an environmental project for your neighborhood that could use some love? Does your project need funding or volunteers? Do you have a community garden that needs some plants and flowers? Do you have a vision for a green roof or clean energy on the roof of your community center or school? Is there an abandoned lot in your neighborhood that could use attention? Do you want to organize some friends to pick up trash in the park where your pets and children play every day?
Spring is almost here. Soon we’ll be waking up our garden beds, rolling over our compost piles, and installing solar panels and wind turbines on our roofs. When the winter thaws, we’ll be itching to get outdoors on the weekends and get involved in the neighborhood. ioby is here to help.
If you have an environmental project that is discrete, site-specific in a NYC neighborhood, with a small budget that needs funding or volunteers, apply to post your project on ioby.org. ioby stands for “in our backyards” and through a web platform connects donors and volunteers to environmental projects in their neighborhoods. To post a project, just go to ioby.org/projects/submit, create a username and password and fill out the online application. For more information about what makes an ioby project, check out our criteria (http://ioby.org/projects/criteria ), our eligibility ( http://ioby.org/projects/eligible ), and our tips for applying (http://ioby.org/projects/tips ).
