August 31st, 2010Dear Souldish Friends,
Here is my latest picks for Souldish this week. It’s short but sweet. For those considering attending Honoring the Divine Feminine, (which I highly recommend) please note that tickets are scarce and it’s a good idea to secure your spot well in advance. This weekend’s highlight is Evolve Fest, another highly recommended event, it’s like no other music festival you’ve ever attended, simply sparkling and well worth the trip, camping is available on site and the music never disappoints.
Bliss and smiles,

Honoring the Divine Feminine
This is going to be a very special event and I highly recommend this because Allyson has put her heart and soul into this herself.
“Through the Goddess, we can discover our strength, enlighten our minds, own our bodies, and celebrate our emotions.”
— Starhawk
This weekend we celebrate the gloriously diverse forms of the divine feminine - open-heartedness, fierce compassion, creativity, the courage both to love and to face the shadow. Come join in a warm, supportive, sacred circle in which we will share our goals, hopes, joys and fears as we empower each other in our transformative journeys. We will explore how we can restore right-relationship to our mother, Gaia, the Earth, and delve into how archetypal expressions of feminine consciousness, such as Sophia, Shekhinah, and Shakti manifest themselves in our art, spirituality, activism, sex, nutrition, parenting, conscious entrepreneurship, medicine and healing. We will dance, chant, laugh, cry, and give voice to the divine river that runs deep within each of us. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to share a few powerful days with an extraordinary group of inspiring, visionary women, including eco-heroine Julia Butterfly-Hill, psychiatrist and author of Weekends at Bellevue, Julie Holland, Omega Institute co-founder Elizabeth Lesser, and legendary countercultural figure “Mountain Girl” Carolyn Garcia, among many others. Meals (Friday dinner through Sunday lunch) and morning yoga classes are included. As the autumnal equinox draws near, you may camp in the natural beauty of CoSM’s 40-acre property, or enjoy the comforts of a nearby hotel. This is also an excellent teaching moment to share with an adolescent, especially mothers and daughters of all ages. The sacred masculine is invited to join in celebrating the Divine Feminine. When Your Awakening Becomes A Crisis
With Kevin Sachs. Do you feel like you’re losing your mind? Are you losing your grip on reality or acting in strange ways? Do you have spontaneous spiritual experiences and not know why? Are you suddenly overwhelmed by powerful energies and emotions? Have you had a life-transforming experience or do you have a spiritual practice and now feel like you’re losing your sanity? Do others tell you something is wrong with you and yet you know something deeper is happening? You may be in the throes of a psycho-spiritual crisis or Spiritual Emergency. This talk is for anyone whose awakening has become a crisis or for anyone who knows someone like this. We will discuss what Spiritual Emergency is and why it happens, different types of Spiritual Emergency, how to determine whether a set of “symptoms” should be treated as a Spiritual Emergency or as a psychological dysfunction. We will also talk about modalities for working with Spiritual Emergency, what kind of support you might need and more. A Spiritual Emergency can be a powerful initiation and a call to a more expanded life, and in this talk we discuss how to use such an event to facilitate powerful psycho-spiritual transformation. Kevin Sachs PhD has been on a spiritual path for 38 years. He has a private practice in New York City where he offers ongoing personal and emotional support for people who do spiritual practice, support in preparing for and integrating deep, transformative inner experiences, and support for people undergoing psychospiritual crisis. Fearless Waves
Tiggrr’s Awesome 5 Rhythms Certification Class…
If you’re not familiar with the 5Rhythms: The 5Rhythms are a practice which celebrates our own bodies, whatever shape they’re in, as our spiritual path. By name, the 5Rhythms are: Flowing, Stacatto, Chaos, Lyrical, and Stillness. The rhythms follow one after the next, in waves. We practice the Rhythms by getting downright down and righteous on the dancefloor. For this series I’ve crafted musical sets which will carry us through the waves, with a focus each week on a different rhythm using a different style of music. There will be exercises, demonstration, and instruction, but the focus will be on moving, on moving beyond resistance, beyond the terrain of mind, out of our heads and certainly beyond these words, and being danced. All are welcome. You don’t have to be a Dancer or know anything about the 5Rhythms to attend. Just arrive on time dressed to sweat, with a bottle of water and a willingness to come into your body. This series is part of my 5Rhythms certification program and there will be no charge. Donations to Solstice studio, however, will be gladly accepted. I Hope to see you there. With Gratitude, Mz Meaghan Fearless

Energetics of Food: How Our Food Becomes Us
At the Interdependence Project, guest workshop with Lara Adler . Join special guest teacher Robert Chodo Campbell for meditation, teaching and discussion exploring the topic of generosity, a key practice in the Buddhist Path. We will discuss the fear that surrounds both giving and receiving and offer practices that empower the individual and communities. How do we determine the quality of our food? Is it price? It is slick packaging or special presentation? Is it home-cooked or from a fancy restaurant? How might the ways in which our food is grown or raised influence us as individuals? Which foods are the most nourishing to our spirits, and which ones may contribute to feelings of helplessness, depression and anxiety? Which foods are grounding and focusing, and which foods impart light, flexible energy? In this workshop, we’ll discuss the inherent qualities of the foods we eat, along with how the ways in which they are grown, raised, harvested, and prepared, might impact and influence our mental, physical, and emotional health. We’ll cover practical ways in which you can shop for foods that positively contribute to your health and well-being and which are abundant in positive energy. You’ll learn to apply the fundamentals of food energetics to your daily life, allowing for more balanced physical, mental, and emotional states. Lara Adler is a Holistic Health Coach, specializing in conscious, ethical eating and helping individuals bridge the gap between belief systems and practical day to day life. She guides clients through a journey of self-discovery, teaching them to heal themselves through whole foods and healthy living.

Working with Your Enemies: Finding Freedom from Hostility & Fear
With Sharon Salzberg and Robert A.F. Thurman. An enemy, whether within (in the shape of a habitual, painful mind state) or without (as someone for whom we steadily feel antipathy or fear) marks the edge between limited lovingkindness, compassion, sympathetic joy and equanimity and the potential boundlessness of these qualities. In exoteric Buddhism, “the enemy” is personified by “Mara” the devil, whom Buddha overcomes through the skillful application of wisdom and compassion. In this workshop we will consider how Mara is dealt with in the Holy Teachings of Vimalakirti as well as how Mara is viewed in other Mahayana and Vajrayana teachings. We will explore inner and outer enemies, look at the fear, anger, and anguish generated by being stuck in a mode of “us” and “them”, and focus on the liberation we are capable of. There will be periods of dialogue, discourse, question and answer, and meditation practice. Sharon Salzberg is cofounder of the Insight Meditation Society (IMS) in Barre, Massachusetts. She is one of America’s leading spiritual teachers and authors, and has been a student of Buddhism since 1971, leading meditation retreats worldwide since 1974. Sharon’s latest book is The Force of Kindness, published by Sounds True. She is also the author of Faith: Trusting Your Own Deepest Experience, published by Riverhead Books; Lovingkindness: The Revolutionary Art of Happiness and A Heart as Wide as the World, both published by Shambhala Publications; and co-author with Joseph Goldstein of Insight Meditation: A Step-by-Step Course on How to Meditate (audio), from Sounds True. For more information about Sharon, please visit: www.sharonsalzberg.com Robert Thurman is Professor of Indo-Tibetan Studies at Columbia University, President of Tibet House U.S., a popular lecturer on Tibetan Buddhism, the translator of many philosophical treatises and sutras, and author of numerous books including the national bestseller, Inner Revolution: Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Real Happiness; Anger, the fifth book from a series on the Seven Deadly Sins, offered by The New York Public Library and Oxford University Press. His most recent book is titled Why the Dalai Lama Matters: His Act of Truth as the Solution for China, Tibet, and the World, published by Atria Books/Beyond Words. For many years at the Jivamukti Yoga School in New York City and throughout the country, popular and highly regarded yoga teacher Ruth Lauer-Manenti (affectionately known as “Lady Ruth”) has been offering her students “dharma talks” stories from her life that accompany her classes and represent the yogic commitments to ahimsa (non- violence), compassion, and service. The teachings she gives are simplistic, yet poignant and memorable. In Sweeping the Dust, you’ll find over forty of these talks, which are accompanied by a reading from classic Hindu scripture, and composed with humor and sensitivity. Sweeping the Dust is the perfect gift for the aspiring yogin and any spiritual seeker wanting to live with thoughtfulness and integrity. - Shri Brahamanda

To have her words of wisdom by your side is truly a unique and special gift.” -Donna Karan, Founder, Urban Zen

This universal resonator—our bodies—and its myriad global sounds ignite audiences of the International Body Music Festival in Concert at Lincoln Center, August 12, 2010. Is this what they mean my dog days of summer? I get so hot that I get cranky. I also get cranky when I don’t make enough time in my life for making things. Very cranky. Especially with all these delicious projects in my plans: finish cute denim skirt, knit socks for winter, knit back to school sweater, make meditation “altar”, not to mention all the fun food things I dream of with all this gorgeous produce busting out all around me. Cranky & hot, but I still can’t wait to craft with you. I can’t sing the praises of Spacaecraft enough: friendly open beautiful space, tons of supplies, great creative spirit. Spacecraft is a big open space with a huge table to spread out around. They have lots of supplies and materials for sale in case you forget something, and they have a backyard. This will be our usual casual drop-in meeting, come any time, or for any part of the time, bring a project you would like to work on, or just come check out what everyone else is up to. Bring snacks, friends, kids, anything that inspires or fuels your creativity. Can’t wait to see you Thursday! Your Humble Servant, The Very Esteemed Callie Janoff

Solar Panel Workshop – Make a Solar Panel
From Wyldon Fishman at NYSES – New York Solar Energy Society. Teach the teachers. Train the trainers. This is a terrific program to bring into the upper grades. The next “Make a Solar Panel” workshop will be on Saturday, August 14, 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. This is a great opportunity to fully understand the simplicity of making a solar panel. Each participant solders several of the Evergreen string ribbon chips together forming the chain. All the soldered chains or strings are surrounded by a “bus” to pick up the charged electrons and bring them around to the two wires that come out of the back of the panel. What takes us a day, a skilled worker completes in one hour working in the method developed by Dr. Richard Komp at Grupo Fenix, Nicaragua, and taught by him in remote areas in India, Africa, Central America and, soon, Peru. Our instructor, John Burke, has assisted Rich and furthers the mission begun at the Maine Solar Energy Association. Join us at NYSES, 5270 Sycamore Avenue, Bronx, NY. Cost: $95.00 includes lunch and plenty of refreshments. The panel we finish is contributed to an educational organization. Please pass this invitation along to your friends and post it to the science departments. Students understanding the basic principles can go on to make the alkaline battery recharger, cars, etc.

Balkan Bacchanalia on the High Seas…Join us as we raise the massive square-rigged sails of New York’s only Tall Ship for a surreal dance party on the high seas. Rebuilt from original plans borrowed from the National Archives, the 160-foot Clipper City, with its masts rising 135′ off the deck, is a faithful replica of the clipper ships that plied America’s waters more than a century ago. DJ Joro Boro, the king of the EthnoMesh Megalophonia sound (as heard at the infamous Bulgarian Bar, on KEXP radio, and at numerous underground parties), spins alongside special guest from Germany, DJ KK, mastermind of the Balkan Express and Favela Blast parties in Cologne. Expect wild music to delight your ears, colorful costumes to delight your eyes, full cash bar to delight your gullet, and plenty of surprises to delight your soul. Find yourself face to face with the Statue of Liberty with a cocktail in one hand, a dance partner in the other, and towering sails soaring above. NYC Esoteric Gathering
With Ralph White, Christopher Bamford, Richard Geldard, Dorothea Rockburne, John Anthony West, Steve Bass, Mitch Horowitz, Ellen Goldberg, Alvin Holm, John Lloyd, Karl Lorenzen and Peeka Trenkle painting by Frederick Church, 1877Today, interest in Western Esotericism is rising. Fifteen years ago, when the Open Center initiated its series of conferences on the Western Esoteric Tradition, there were very few gatherings that sought to bring alive the beauty and depth of this profound worldview. This weekend aims to be both a conference and a celebration of the resurgence of this great path. We will reflect on the significance of the Western Tradition within the contemporary cultural landscape, complete last year’s exploration of Inner America, and look forward to next year’s Esoteric Quest for Ancient Alexandria. As there is no Esoteric Quest to distant and exotic lands in 2010, the Open Center felt it would like to offer a homegrown esoteric weekend right here in New York City at the tail end of the summer, the time when so many Quests have taken place. Please join a rich complement of speakers as we build esoteric community, meditate on America’s early spiritual communities and writers, and deepen our knowledge of ancient philosophy, geometry and art. Presentations Include: • The Arrival of Rosicrucianism in America• Emerson and the Alexandrian Neo-Platonists• Sacred Geometry and the Library of Alexandria• Tarot and the Western Hermetic Path• Alexandria’s Influence on the Patterns of Islamic Art in Andalusia• The High Wisdom of Ancient Egypt, and• a walking tour of Esoteric New York City

))Public Service: Community Gardens((
The OASIS mapping website — the only source for interactive community garden maps across New York City — now displays the latest inventory of gardens from GrowNYC. You can search for any of almost 500 community gardens at http://www.oasisnyc.net/garden/gardensearch.aspx More information, including a tutorial for accessing the garden maps, is available at http://oasisnyc.gc.cuny.edu/index.php/Community_Gardens_2010.
The inventory is the result of a year-long effort by GrowNYC to survey gardeners and GreenThumb staff about the most up-to-date status of each of 483 community gardens throughout the five boroughs. It is being made available on OASIS in time to provide valuable context and background for activists, elected officials, the media, and others who are evaluating proposed rules for the gardens that will have far-reaching effects on whether these gardens will face development risks or not.
When you zoom to a garden on OASIS, the maps and related information will identify its protection status under the expiring rules (adopted in 2002) and which agency (if any) has jurisdiction over the garden. Each garden mapped on OASIS is profiled with information about when it was founded, what is grown there, and if you can volunteer. If you’d like to start a new garden, you can also use the OASIS maps to obtain helpful information such as property ownership, nearby resources such as schools, and surrounding land use patterns.
In addition to community gardens, OASIS’s maps show the locations of almost 150 gardens located on school property. The NYC Community Garden Mapping Project (CGMP) at GrowNYC (formerly Council on the Environment of NYC) has been inventorying and monitoring community gardens and open spaces throughout the city since 2001, making this information widely and publicly available via the www.OASISnyc.net <http://www.oasisnyc.net/> mapping site.

We love to talk to prospective students about what sets our course apart and makes it so life changing. Send us an email, give us a call! Permaculture:, •is an ecological design science that provides insights and practical techniques for living a fruitful and abundant life.; •is addressing the major issues of our day from a whole systems perspective.; •is a worldwide movement that is helping to regenerate local ecologies and economies.; •is a solution oriented ecological approach to retrofitting our societies. This course is perfect for motivated individuals who wish to use the tools of Permaculture in urban and rural environs as well as for modeling sustainable and regenerative businesses. Lectures, extensive and diverse handouts, field trips and hands-on activities: Urban redesign and retrofit, passive solar and natural building,inner-city gardening techniques, indoor and apartment gardening, indoor mushroom cultivation, fermented foods, whole foods, Living Machines and natural waste water treatment, niche market and cooperatively owned business ideas, rain gardens, living roofs, rooftop gardens, how to clean polluted air with plants, biogas generators, Bioregionalism and regional self reliance, the economics of globalization, evolution of life on earth, history of agriculture, Biodynamics, natural history of Eastern woodlands, woodlot management, watershed health, the integration of animals into cultivated ecosystems, and so much more. To receive a certificate students must attend all 11 classes and present a final Permaculture site design. Students will be given the option to present their final design individually which is a different approach than most PDCs. In our experience, and from what our growing number of students say, this contributes to a more practical, professional and intellectually stimulating learning experience. As a result a number of our student’s final presentations have gone from paper (or electronic presentations) to actualized, real-world designs.

Rafter Sass of Liberation Ecology has facilitated workshops on social project design, Permaculture design, the economics of globalization, mycology, and wild foods and medicines. Fishers Of Men: The Gospel Of An Ayahuasca Vision Quest.
With Adam Elenbaas
For centuries Amazonian shamans have used the sacred and mind-expanding plant medicine, ayahuasca, to communicate with the spirits of the forest, receive visions and heal the sick. In recent years, ayahuasca has attracted spiritual seekers from the West who journey to the Amazon to partake in traditional ceremonies.
Join authors Adam Elenbaas and Daniel Pinchbeck (”2012: The Return of Quetzacoatl”) to celebrate the publication of Elenbaas’ remarkable memoir, “Fishers of Men: The Gospel of an Ayahuasca Vision Quest.” (Tarcher/ Penguin). At once a gritty coming of age story in the tradition of The Basketball Diaries, and a psychedelic travelogue in the line of authors like Terence McKenna, Jeremy Narby and Pinchbeck, “Fishers of Men” is an unflinchingly honest story about the transformational experience of drinking ayahuasca. This Reality Sandwich event begins with a reading from the book, and is followed by a candid discussion on the subject of ayahuasca shamanism and its relevance for us today.
From his troubled youth in the American heartland, growing up a preacher’s son in the Evangelical Christian Church, to his experimentation with Pentecostalism and later his drug and sex-fueled downward spiral in Chicago, Elenbaas examines with unusual insight, good humor, and heart-breaking compassion his troubled relationship to his father, his family, and his Christian faith. After a chance encounter with psychedelic mushrooms at his grandfather’s cottage in rural Michigan, Elenbaas begins on a voyage of self-discovery that leads him to transformational visionary encounters with Jesus inside of ayahuasca ceremonies in the depths of the Peruvian Amazon.

Karnival of Kuriocities
In these trying times it’s refreshing to know that there are still some folks who know how to please a crowd. Are you a closet voyeur? All the better, please come! The organizers of Karnival of Kuriocities are among the rare few. These folks always put on a memorable event. Be prepared for some dangerous good times. Revelers welcome.
In the age of the glamorous cirque-style spectacle, anarchy and rebellion are often forgotten. The word “carnival” itself is associated with scantily-clad showgirls, while its roots in the “carnal” are neglected. This Friday, July 30th, we bring you the meat and the mayhem that circus is made of. This disaster of a show will feature things that aren’t even possible. (Unfortunately we had to comply with House of Yes’ rules, and throw in a few scantily clad showgirls anyways just to keep ‘em happy.) Starring: Albert Cadabra - The Great Deceiver who eats razor blades, hammers spikes into his face, and electrocutes himself with 20,000 volts of electricity for fun. Betty Bloomerz who uses the snake like contortion of her mysterious innards to pull a massive 27″ sword blade deep into her petite 5′4″ body amongst other things. Anya Sapozhnikova, everyone’s favorite whiskey guzzling aerialist slut, (you might want to bring a date to see this stuff.) Vermont Joy Parade is a six piece brass band hailing from Burlington providing the dance party into the wee hours playing a fervent and eclectic blend of old-time, blues, dixieland, Cajun, jug, and klezmer.

With spectacular footage from across the globe, Climate Refugees sketches out the scenario of displacement and upheaval. Nash’s film is a fascinating and unnerving wake-up call. The Lost Circus
Where circus meets dark cabaret with a steampunk twist. Presented by Gemini & Scorpio. The Circus is said to have started in ancient Egypt when the court entertainers of an immortal Pharaoh escaped their slavery under a midnight moon. They have traveled the globe for centuries, gathering talent from every great empire as the empire itself begins to crumble: Istanbul, Saint Petersburg, London, Berlin…and now they have made it across the sea. At the stroke of midnight, discover a circus long lost. With music from times gone by or times that never were: dark string fusion by Brooklyn’s own Copal and bohemian cabaret in 13 languages by Vagabond Opera - our special guests from Portland, OR. And announcing our secret guest: circus composer Sxip Shirey, on his last night before he leaves NYC. The circus unfolds to the bands and in between: mind-bending contortion by Jonathan Nosan, aerial dance by Madeline Hoak; tribal fusion bellydance by Lauren Robbiani and special guest Rio; fire & gorgeousness by Ali Luminescent; gypsy fortunetelling by Kai Altair; an original installation & performance by artist (and Minsky Sister) Kristen Rhea van Liew. A special dark performance by the latex queen herself, The Baroness. Beautiful costumed creatures perform feats of fire in the courtyard. Dusty circus visuals set the mood. DJ sophybot fascinates your ears with a renegade circus tent soundtrack. With your ever-dapper host, steampunk author G.D. Falksen. Fanciful body artistry by AMBodyArt. Photo-op custom art installation with works by Molly Crabapple and Kathleen Green. Dress code (required): dark cabaret, traveling circus, steampunk Victorian, Edward Gorey, Tim Burton, Mad Max, City of Lost Children.

Welcome to the: Life of Fire
TheDanger, 3rd Ward, Mister Saturday Night, Blk Market Membership and The Lady Circus are combining forces to build an urban landscape of sculpture lit by flames, riotous performance and all-night djs nestled within three cavernous warehouses in the heart of Brooklyn.
The experience begins in a 117-year old former brewery, continues two blocks away in three floors of a former furniture factory, and ends as the sunrises over a former garment factory of two gorgeous floors and a wide open courtyard.
Expect moments of beauty, glimpses of nudity, whispers from strangers and that one perfect moment when you know you’ve met the love of your life (hint: it’s New York City.)
The music evolves from the classic to the sublime with multiple lofts filled with the best lofi-techno, dirty house, jump-up hip-hop, ambient downtempo and the brashest live brass.
Arrive Early For: The Egyptian Lover and Afrika Bambaataa (!) The forefathers of electro and hip-hop are playing the same stage for the first time. This epic pair will be setting off the night at 10pm. Icons of music history and future, these men will amaze as they show a new generation of music selectors how it’s done.
Stay All Night With: Mister Saturday Night with Justin Carter, Blk Market Membership with Taimur and Fahad, dj Fflood with dark funk-house fresh from the West Coast, local favorite Jesse Mann, a surprise appearance from the “secret dj”, and the sunrise ceremony set from Zemi 17.
Before touring to Burning Man, the infamous Image Node is bringing a dome full of sight and sound featuring live ambient trip-hop by Autophage, experimental downtempo from Borne, Ezekiel Honig, FutureBen and DJ Tinseltown with visuals by the Housewives’ Guide To Anatomy, Fuzzy Bastard plus special guests.
The daredevil beauties of the Lady Circus are orchestrating a Vermont invasion, including live brass, backwoods funk and the all girl jug band, Lady Tub, the mysteries of the Mickey Western Band, old-time folk from Anna Pardenik and the loud, gorgeous cacophony of the Vermont Joy Parade.
Dozens of performers will climb through the crowds, the ruins and the sculpture that inhabit them as lead by Xango Shola along with the fire mavens Sandhi Ferreira and Phoenix of Ashes. Master builder Rosanna Scimeca is creating a cathedral like entrance with an ornate steel, fire and sound installation featuring the famed Gamelatron, the worlds first full robotic Indonesian Gamelan. Ice sculptors Josh Kalin and David Sarussi will build a room of ice and flame live while Betty Brooklyn servers liquor drenched sundaes and ice cream dreams.
All this and more this Saturday, July 31st…
There are moments in this city that seem almost impossible - when the the
dark sky is gorgeous, the music is intoxicating and New York City devolves
into that hedonistic adventure that we all live for. On this night there
will be fire, there will be fame and there will be a moment when the night
turns exquisitely out-of-control.

Church of Craft
Summer is sleepy. This summer seems to be no exception. I love it when New York empties out on the weekends as overheated urbanites flee to the beach or the woods. It somehow makes the city seem more civilized. So if you are staying in town this weekend come join us for some seriously civilized crafting. Etsy is cool and dry, your fellow crafters are inspired and friendly, and you can spend some time doing what makes you feel more like you: making things. It is true, the sewing machines have been fixed! The labs come equipped with your basics: scissors, tape, pens, thread, but I encourage you to bring supplies that you want to work with in addition to what is there. More about the labs at: Etsy is all about encouraging people to make stuff, just like us, so we get to have this special event craft-on every month, where access to all of their goodies is totally free. If you like it there you can go back and craft Monday evenings. Our meeting will be the usual casual drop in affair, come any time, bring anyone, bring anything you are working on or come & just check out what everyone else is up to. Snacks are welcome.

Making Your Roof Cool - NYC’s White Roof Painting Program
Sponsored by: Sierra Club Community Event Join us for a presentation by John Kolp, Sierra Club’s NYC Cool Roof Program coordinator. Most of the 1 billion+ square feet of roof surfaces in NYC is made of black tar paper. In hot summer months these black roofs will heat up to over 200 degrees. Buildings absorb most of this heat and slowly release it over night, contributing to the urban heat island effect. Roofs coated with highly reflective white paints reduce roof temperatures by 60 - 80 degrees. Columbia University researchers discovered a cool roof can reduce air-conditioning costs by 50% in a one-story building and 25% in a two-story building. Hear about options to support this program by volunteering to paint roofs, getting your building’s roof painted white, and finding nonprofit groups willing to paint their roofs with deeply discounted paint donated by the City. Refreshments will be provided. Meet other Sierra Club members. Contact jlkolp@yahoo.com.

Evolver Energy Medicine: Chelation & Chakra Balancing with Jonathan Talat Phillips
Join Evolver co-founder Jonathan Talat Phillips on an evening journey through the ancient art of energy healing. In this workshop, we will explore the foundational technique to Jonathan’s Chi Healing practice – “The Chelation.” This is a potent hands-on-healing process that enables the healer to:
Channel in energy through the hands, bringing healing frequencies to where energy has been depleted in the client, Ground the client to the vibrations of the earth, Balance the major chakras (energy centers) in the body, open up areas where energy has been blocked, stagnant, or stuck. Strengthen and cleanse the entire auric field We will learn all the hand positions to this process, as well as how to open and close a healing session. Each person will have the opportunity to both give and receive a full chelation healing during this workshop, which means we will leave feeling refreshed, vibrant, and relaxed by the end of the workshop. If you can, bring a yoga mat to lie on for receiving the healing. Anyone can learn to heal with energy, and all levels are welcome. This workshop will provide a safe container for everyone, whether you are a beginner just starting out or an advanced practitioner honing your art. Join us as we learn, share, and open up new dimensions of the heart. (Note: There is a cat on the premises for those who are allergic).

The Path of Deep Transformative Experience
With Kevin Sachs. Do you attend experiential workshops and ceremonies and have deep experiences, yet wonder if you could do more to incorporate them into your life? Do you return home feeling unsettled and “stirred up” and not know what to do? Do you wish you could incorporate your experiences into one integrated life path that uses them as a starting point for ongoing inner work and lasting growth? Experiential workshops, breathwork, shamanic journeys and ceremonies, vision quests, sweat lodges, trance dances, ecstatic chanting and intensive yoga or meditation retreats all involve working in nonordinary states of consciousness. However, by themselves, nonordinary states and experiences are just the beginning of a complete and rewarding path. This talk will cover what nonordinary states are, why they have the potential to move us toward healing and wholeness, and how to work effectively with them. Topics will include Stan Grof’s maps of consciousness, transpersonal and mystical experiences, working with difficult emotional material, shadow work, the importance of containment, set and setting, and the need for adequate preparation and integration around the experiences. I will discuss methods I use to prepare and integrate, including Eugene Gendlin’s Focusing. I will also cover the archetypes of initiation, death and rebirth, and how understanding these overarching themes helps us to work more effectively with powerful experiences. Kevin is an advanced student of Holotropic Breathwork™ at Grof Transpersonal Training. He is also studying to certify as a Focusing Professional with Ann Weiser Cornell and Jane Bell and studies shamanism with Jan Edl Stein and Kenn Day. He spent many years studying Siddha Yoga Meditation with Swami Muktananda and Gurumayi Chidvilasananda. Kevin offers individual sessions in New York City or by phone.

Evolver Spores: Day of Action
In just over one year, Evolver Spores have spread across the US and abroad, carrying the seeds of a new planetary culture. More than 40 regional groups have sprouted up during these months, bringing together a diverse, conscious community to explore topics critical to our time. But Evolvers don’t simply meet and discuss; they take action in manifesting the world they want to create. Over the past year, we’ve seen the Regionals initiate alternative currencies, beach clean-ups, healing circles, permaculture gardens, eco- festivals, the building of Earthships, and more. For this month’s Spore, the entire Evolver network will activate to create positive change in our communities. Join our agents of transformation in coordinating river clean-ups, “renegade gardening,” community foresting, assisting flood victims in Hungary, and other ways we can be of service to our world. (Special thanks to our Spore sponsor, Tarcher/Penguin, publisher of RS author Adam Elenbaas‚ “Fisher’s of Men: The Gospel of an Ayahuasca Vision Quest.”)

Call for Stories - The Unheard Voices Documentary Project
The Unheard Voices documentary project is seeking interviews and testimonials from drug-related offenders and ex-offenders, and their families, on the far ranging consequences of their criminal convictions. Inspired by Steven Spielberg’s Shoah Project, which gathered video testimonies from survivors and other witnesses to the Holocaust, the Unheard Voices documentary project is building an archive of testimonies on the cultural holocaust that has been the War on Drugs. “No issue has had more impact on the criminal justice system in the past three decades than national drug policy. The ‘war on drugs,’ officially declared in the early 1980s, has been the primary contributor to the enormous growth of the prison system in the United States during the last quarter-century and has affected all aspects of the criminal justice system and, consequently, American society.” ~ The Sentencing Project, “A 25 Year Quagmire: The ‘War on Drugs’ and its Impact on American Society.” (2007) If you or anyone in your family has had a criminal conviction for a nonviolent drug-related offense, we would like to hear about the lasting impacts to your lives, and how you overcame your circumstances, or were permanently affected. Your stories will help put a human face on a critical social issue that has been overwhelmed by fear, politics, racial prejudice, and intolerance, in an era where the public attitude has been, “out of sight, out of mind.” When the stories hit home, the policies begin to change. We seek written testimonials and interview subjects for our video archive. If you would like your voice to be heard please contact Director Charles Shaw at charles.shaw@opendemocracy.net. Unheard Voices is a collaborative venture of the Exile Nation Project, openDemocracy and the Tedworth Charitable Trust. Interviews & Testimonials will be initially published on the openDemocracy Drug Policy Forum.

Evolver NYC Spore: The Spirit of Water
Join fellow NYC Evolvers in celebrating the most vital ingredient to all life on Earth: water. Although it covers almost three-quarters of the planet and fills nearly 70% of our own bodies, this precious and seemingly boundless substance is becoming increasingly scarce? Renee Vogelsang (East Coast Organizer for Food & Water Watch) will introduce us to a few of the most urgent water issues currently facing our communities, such as the consequences of natural gas drilling, privatization of water resources, and the “peak water” crisis. Lenny Librizzi (Assistant Director of Open Space Greening at GrowNYC) will talk about rainwater harvesting in the home and in community gardens. Then, you’re invited to take part as we direct our loving intentions towards a water blessing and healing prayer for the Gulf. You can also head up to our scenic rooftop for an elemental breath purification session led by Evolver co-founder Jonathan Talat Phillips.
Come early to experience Transmissions – an audio-visual work centered on the chromatic scale and the Zodiac cycle. Drinks and vegan treats by Organic Bliss. Music, mingling, & more!

HOPE Conference
The HOPE Conference is for the hacker community and all who want to learn how to control technology — not be controlled by it. It is a three-day, multi-tiered hacker conference, a celebration of technology, sponsored by 2600 Magazine.
Julian Assange: of Wikileaks is one of our keynote speakers at the Next HOPE. Over the years, and particularly within the past few months, Julian has demonstrated some of the key values of those in the hacker and journalist community who strive to get real information out of the hands of bureaucracy and coverups and share it with the rest of the world, all the while protecting the sources. He has been on the front page of newspapers worldwide with the revelation by Wikileaks of a videotape showing a U.S. Army Apache helicopter attack in Baghdad that killed a dozen people, including two Reuters news staff. Previous attempts at uncovering the tape through the government had failed and its release clearly showed that there was no active firefight between U.S. forces and those killed, as had been maintained in official statements.

Rev. Billy Send-off to Appalachia
We have tried to bring down Holy Fire upon those logos in the malls. We always do this with an unseen partner working with us — somewhere out in the world. Now with Mountaintop Removal in Appalachia, we have the same consumer society set-up as the other struggles. There’s the same colonizing of labor and natural resources. With this campaign, though, our partners are only nine hours away in Coal River Valley, West Virginia. We get to meet them, and stay with and sing with our hero activists.
Come to our Send-off to Appalachia. Put us on that bus. We’ll get some love and we’ll get some more murdered mountain mud to power our way into the mind and soul of UBS — that Swiss bank that finances strip-mining now that Chase backed down. Their secret bank accounts are bursting with mountain crimes, and they will change their evil ways. Appalachia-lujah!

The Food Obstructions IV: A Benefit for Just Food
In 1967, Jorgen Leth made a 12 minute film, The Perfect Human. In 2003, Lars von Trier challenged Leth, his mentor as a filmmaker, to remake the film with obstructions that would complicate its production. Von Trier titled the result the Five Obstructions.
On July 18, three Brooklyn food enthusiasts challenge their mentors and fellow culinary artists to a similar challenge, the Food Obstructions. Fifteen contestants will be accepted to make a dish of their own originality. In the spirit of the film, there are five obstructions to whatever type of dish they will make:
1) Must contain at least one locally-sourced vegetable
2) Must contain locally-sourced honey
3) Cannot contain meat
4) Must contain an ingredient that is spherical in shape and eaten whole (think chickpeas, not oranges)
5) Must be topped with a crunchy garnish.
The dish will be judged on:
+ Taste
+ Synthesis of Obstructions
+ Presentation
Prizes from local businesses, such as The Brooklyn Kitchen, Radish, and Brooklyn Farmacy, will be awarded to the winners.
4p; $free for competitors, $10 to attend and sample the entries, all proceeds will be donated to Just Food, a non-profit dedicated to making fresh, locally grown food available and accessible to all New Yorkers

For the Water
This meeting is a gathering for the water. Since April, we have watched in horror as tens of millions of gallons of oil have spewed into the Gulf. Many of us are feeling powerless in the face of this catastrophe. We are also feeling furious, sad, heartsick – indeed the list could go on and on. This meeting is an opportunity for those of us who have wondered if there’s anything we can do to make a difference. Many of us know that gratitude and appreciation are the highest emotional frequencies, with appreciation most similar to love (cosmic, universal, unconditional). The intention of this meeting is to come together and hold gratitude and appreciation for the water and its inhabitants. Indeed, we might even find it in our hearts to transmute some of the blame and anger that’s also in the mix of this situation. As we gather to hold this common intention, we tap into its frequency. With each additional person, the frequency is strengthened, as the amplitude of the waves increases. Let’s come together and create a powerful current of love, appreciation, and gratitude in the midst of a dark situation. (The evening will be guided by Brennan energy healer Samantha Ibarguen (http://www.igwell.com/)

Evolver Energy Medicine: Chelation & Chakra Balancing with Jonathan Talat Phillips
Join Evolver co-founder Jonathan Talat Phillips on an evening journey through the ancient art of energy healing. In this workshop, we will explore the foundational technique to Jonathan’s Chi Healing practice — “The Chelation.” This is a potent hands-on-healing process that enables the healer to:

”No issue has had more impact on the criminal justice system in the past three decades than national drug policy. Interviews & Testimonials will be initially published on the openDemocracy Drug Policy Forum.

))Call for Artists((
* Call for Participants/Art Projects for Stranded: The Forbidden City, a one-night foray into a magical metropolis of imagination, hidden inside an enormous warehouse in Brooklyn, taking place September 4. We are seeking installations, activities, performances, and games to entertain and delight the City’s tourists. Projects that are all of those things at once are ideal. Volunteers of all stripes are also welcome. As the name suggests, the theme is an exploration of cities, past, present and future, real and imagined. Of course, the title is a double entendre, suggesting both Beijing’s dynasty-era grandeur, and also a libertine red light district. Artists are free to explore either or both meanings, or simply run the laundromat of their dreams. This is the third annual Stranded event. It started on Labor Day weekend 2008 at the Brewery warehouse in Bushwick as a gathering for those unable to attend Burning Man. Last year the event expanded to a 26,000 square foot warehou
se palace in Sunset Park, and began attracting a wider variety of artists and attendees. This year, we are going to continue the trend with more space, art and friends and raise the bar for creative revelry to skyscraper heights. If your project requires a stipend, please apply no later than August 6. The final deadline is August 20. Quick submission form: wandbnyc.com/forbiddenart. Quick volunteer form: wandbnyc.com/civilservants. Art questions: evalansberry(at)gmail.com. Volunteer questions: pneumaticdevotion(at)gmail.com. General inquiries: info(at)wandbnyc.com.

Harnessing Soul Force, Building Love
A new workshop by Rachel Mann, PhD. This event will be held at the Bridge Between the Worlds Retreat Center, Charlottesville, VA. Mohandas Gandhi coined the word satyagraha, translated as Soul Force. Soul Force is the power we draw on when we face our inner and outer challenges with courage, love and peace. In shamanic teachings, this is known as “power” or being in ayni, or right relationship with all things. It is the power of love. Join Rachel Mann in exploring how to harness Soul Force in yourself through the practices of Peruvian shamanism. Firekeeping, ritual, meditations on lovingkindness and, art will be part of this self-exploratory weekend. Rachel Mann, PhD is a shamanic healer trained in the energy medicine of the Q’ero people of the Peruvian Andes. Her experience and interest in shamanism and indigenous spirituality and healing reaches back 15 years. She is a an anthropologist and folklorist who teaches on the topics of the new shamanism in the West, Gandhi, and in the field of peace and violence studies. She has a private client healing practice in Charlottesville, VA and works as a consultant to organizations dealing with problems of violence. She publishes two occasional newsletters, Shamanism in a New Age and Explorations in Kindness. Her writings on shamanism, violence, peace, and spirituality have appeared in both scholarly and popular journals. rachel@mettaknowledge.com

Skillfully Navigating Your Awakening
With Kevin Sachs. Do you ever feel that your spiritual practice is making you crazier rather than more peaceful? Much of what we are taught about spiritual practices that they’re about feeling peaceful, relaxed and tranquil is wrong. Powerful spiritual practices bring up uncomfortable emotions like fear, anger and sadness. The point is not for us to get rid of these feelings so we can live in bliss. These things that emerge are our treasures exiled parts of ourselves that long to be welcomed home so we can become whole. In this talk, we will explore principles of working with the mind and emotions in the context of an ongoing spiritual practice. We will discuss why and how spiritual practices evoke feelings and emotions, what types of things might emerge and how to work with them, “spiritual bypassing,” death, rebirth and initiation, projection and transference, when to seek outside support, and more. Kevin Sachs PhD is the director of Safe Journeys Home, and has been on a spiritual path for 38 years. Kevin has a private practice in New York City where he offers ongoing psychological and emotional support for people who do spiritual practice, support in preparing for and integrating deep, transformative inner experiences, and support for people undergoing psychospiritual crisis. Kevin is an advanced student of Holotropic Breathwork™ at Grof Transpersonal Training. He is also studying to certify as an Inner Relationship Focusing Professional with Ann Weiser Cornell and Jane Bell and studies shamanism with Jan Edl Stein and Kenn Day. He spent many years studying Siddha Yoga Meditation with Swami Muktananda and Gurumayi Chidvilasananda.

The Transition Movement - The Emergence of Community Resilience
With Michael Brownlee, Transition Colorado. Please register by calling 908.362.6735. “We are entering an unavoidable period of energy descent,” states Michael Brownlee, co-founder of Transition Colorado in Boulder. The scientific consensus is that human-caused greenhouse gas emissions are already having a devastating impact on the ecosphere that supports all life, and this will get very much worse in the future. The Transition movement offers a way to live into the possibilities of this challenging time with both a vision for a new and more nourishing world, and a process for moving in this direction. Bring others from your community with you to hear this informative and inspirational talk by Michael Brownlee, who was instrumental in bringing the Transition movement to the United States from England. For more information on this event as well as on the Introduction to Transition weekend on September 16-19, visit our website at www.genesisfarm.org. Long Dance Workshop with Special Guest Deborah Koff-Chapin
Join us on Wednesday, June 30th at 7pm at the Interdependence Project, facilitated by Deborah Koff-Chapin. The Long Dance is a form of ceremonial dance that incorporates elements of creativity from each individual in the form of movement, sound, dramatic enactment, costuming, writing or visual art-making. The overall context opens the way for co-creation with other individuals as well as with other dimensions of being. The combined energies of the group creates an experience that empowers intentions, both individual and collective. The dance was developed by Elizabeth Cogburn in the 1970’s and 80’s. Deborah Koff-Chapin was an active participant in the evolution of the form from 1976 through 1984, and co-founded a Long Dance Circle in her home community in 1983 that continues to be active until this day. This form has rarely been presented to the general public.
Can’t afford it? It is our full intention to accommodate the financial needs of anyone who has a genuine commitment to practice and study. Reduced Payment Options and Work-Study are always available. Please contactlani@theidproject.org to make alternative arrangements.

Deepening the Shamanic Experience
With Itzhak Beery. This “mini-apprenticeship” is for those who have had some exposure to shamanism and some experience of journeying into non-ordinary states but who wish to go deeper, either to make shamanism part of their daily practice or to add its age-old healing methods to their repertoire of healing practices. We will explore rituals and practices from several traditions, including those of the Ecuadorian Quechua and of the Brazilian Amazon; shamanic journeying to the upper, middle and lower worlds; the role of power animals and teachers; the use of huachas (sacred items); how to set up and properly use a sacred altar from which to draw power; chants and the role of music in healing; shamanic divination; the development of intuition; healing techniques; and, most importantly, how to protect oneself from negative energies. Weekly homework will be given. Note: Bring drums and/or rattles if you have them, as well as eye coverings, a blanket, a journal and a pen. Sage will be burned in class. Itzhak Beery is a NYC-based shamanic healer who conducts shamanic workshops in the U.S., Israel and Hawaii. He trained intensively with the Ecuadorian Quechua, Shuar, Uru-eu-wau-wau and other South American indigenous shamans, and is a co-founder of the NY Shamanic Circle.

Harnessing Soul Force, Building Love
A new workshop by Rachel Mann, PhD.

Freeform Dance With Meaghan Tiggrr Fearless
Freeform Dance: We all have a dance living in our bodies which does not belong to any one discipline, which is absolutely unique to each of us. In this workshop we will journey deep within ourselves to free it. We will create a safe, sacred environment in which we are encouraged to feel our vulnerabilities and express our strengths, and will move through guided meditations both in silence and with music. We will go forth into the unknown, giving permission to ourselves to let go of the rulebook and truly be danced. Whether a beginning-level seeker, a seasoned ecstatic dancer, or anywhere in between, this session will inspire and empower your personal creative process. Hopefully we will all have some fun along the way. Bring a notebook or journal; as time and interest allows, we will share our experiences with one another. -tiggrr4

Beauty + Ruin
This weekend you will find yourself in the aftermath. Two-dozen artists have built a landscape of beauty and ruin within large geodesic domes, ragged tents and hidden lounges. It starts with an intimate conversation in the corner of an army-tent turned Bedouin hide-away, continues on the dance-floor pressed against the bouncing crowd and Brooklyn’s brashestmarch bands, then finishes with a drink, a whisper and the sunrise slipping through windows. This party is about building the best we can out of the little we have. The Music: Mikerline Afro-Haitian Dance + Drum Troupe : The feverish intensity of their performance is built on the deep cultural history of Haiti and the legends born from it. The Rude Mechanical Orchestra : Mix a slew of drums with a bunch of brass then toss in a fire-cracker and you have the sound and movement of the Rude Mechanical Orchestra. The Hungry March Band : This is one of New York City’s legendary march bands. For a decade they’ve played the streets, warehouses and concert halls of our town and toured the world several times over. Their sweaty, classic sound captures the soul of this city in all its beauty and ruin. dj Kiva : One of the kings of The Dub Stop, he will be bringing his patented stutta-step sound that brings together the best of hip-hop to jump-up in a way that is guaranteed to move you. Cumba Mela : A dj trio that explores the boundless world of global bass music from tribal house to Balkan brass to electro and deeper… Junglez : Explores the dark side of dubstep and the science of broken beats. The Stellar Chic Duo : Arrive early to experience the experimental live composition mashing exotica with space age lounge in a new performance that must be heard. dj Zemi 17 : The late night crowd favorite brings in the sunrise with intimate techno and his self-branded space hause. For the past few years Zemi has been the resident dj at TheDanger events. Too many times we have planned on going home just after 7am but the sound of Zemi 17 and the energy of the crowd wouldn’t let it happen. But then, the dance floor at 9:19am is Brooklyn at it’s best. Plus mischief, fire and overhead performance by Anya Sapozhnikova, Carrie Cash, Tajna Tanovic, Kae Burk and the 626 Roving Sangria Pump (wait for it…) The Beauty + Ruin: Explore five geodesic domes built into living art installations themed: Waterfall, Storm, Play, Home and Survive. Each will be a world unto itself with light and fire, water and magic. Smaller installations will complete the articulation of ruin across the 13,000sqft. expanse of this deep Brooklyn loft. Lopi LaRoe, Arielle Bier, Olivia Katz, Anna Ialeggio, David Siegel, Ryan O’Connor, Deb Yoon, the House of Collections, William Jackson Etundi Jr., Lord, Jordan, Mark Krawczuk, Band of Bicycles and many more… Also, Swoon, Tod Seelie and Ben Wolf are putting together a show of stand-out art sold to benefit their Haiti Shelter project: konbitshelter.org. Drinks will be cheap, the night will be full and the fire will be real…Dress in your best rag-tag formal wear. Pull out that dusty ill-fitting tuxedo or the prom dress you burned to erase the memory then saved because even burned memories are better than nothing at all. And don’t forget the flower in your lapel. Note: This is the first Danger event in a long time and the last for t foreseeable future. (Something more interesting is coming…) Every once in a while a cause comes along that pulls out the best in people. Most of the art, the heart and the blood for this event and, the Domes for Haiti project it benefits, comes from Lopi LaRoe and her team of generous artists/builders. For more information on what this party is raising funds for see: http://www.domesforhaiti.org/ If you want to be a part of the event setup (it’s fun) or volunteer to build shelter for Haiti write to: info@domesforhaiti.org. 3rd Ward Brooklyn has graciously put off construction on their new second floor art spaces in order to host this fundraising event. 3rd Ward is full of heroes.

“Kanyini” - The ‘Stolen Generation’
This is a very special film that I highly recommend. The film was written and narrated by Uncle Bob Randall Tjilpi elder of the Yankunytjatjara Aboriginal Nation. The evening will begin with an Anangu welcome song and feature the film Kanyini, followed by audience dialogue. Plot Synopsis: This documentary is based on the remarkable life and philosophy of Bob Randall, an elder of the Yankunytjatjara people of Uluru in Central Australia. It explores his idyllic early life, shattered when he is taken from his family as one of the ‘Stolen Generation’, and his journey since then. ‘Uncle Bob’ also explores the reasons for the tragic problems in many Australian Aboriginal communities today. While there is sadness and desperation, the film finishes with a sense of hope. Archival footage from the very early days of white contact with indigenous peoples is skilfully interwoven into the film. Written by John Haberecht, IMDB.com

Parkour - a new inspiring show from MTV
May 17th, 2010It’s not everyday that I can honestly say that there’s a new inspiring show on TV, but here is it. MTV’s new show, Parkour, demonstrates what is possible with the right mix of courage, focus, belief in oneself and lots of practice. It celebrates the human spirit and inspires us to pursue our dreams with the same passion as these brave souls, and surprise ourselves with the results. We are capable of so much more than we often give ourselves credit for. Enjoy!
A link to the show’s homepage:
http://www.mtv.com/shows/parkour/series.jhtml
Here’s a little blurb about Parkour from wikimedia:
Parkour (sometimes also abbreviated to PK), also parcours, or l’art du déplacement [1] (English: the art of displacement) is the physical discipline of training to overcome any obstacle within one’s path by adapting one’s movements to the environment.[2] It is a non-competitive, physical discipline of French origin in which participants run along a route, attempting to negotiate obstacles in the most efficient way possible. Skills such as jumping and climbing, or the more specific parkour moves are employed. The object of parkour is to get from one place to another using only the human body and the objects in the environment. The obstacles can be anything in one’s environment, but parkour is often seen practiced in urban areas because of the many suitable public structures available such as buildings and rails.
The term freerunning is sometimes used interchangeably with parkour. While superficially similar, freerunning places more emphasis on the aesthetics of movement and finding creative ways to overcome obstacles than on efficiency and simplicity. However, there is some controversy over the exact definitions of the two terms.
A practitioner of parkour is called a traceur if male, or traceuse if female.

Evolver Spores: The Resilience Revolution
In our globalized world, the basic survival needs of many communities are precariously out of their hands. Multinational corporations exercise near-total control over the systems that sustain and connect us, from food and clean water to energy and communication. At the same time, natural disasters such as the recent earthquakes in Haiti and Chile seem to be occurring with more frequency and intensity, while manmade catastrophes like the ongoing economic collapse continue to loom. As we saw with the bungled response of FEMA after Hurricane Katrina, reliance on inept government bureaucracies in times of crisis is a perilous act of faith. In a world fraught with uncertainty, an empowered and resilient local community is the best defense. How would your community react if it suddenly had to fend for itself? What are some vital tools and techniques we can implement today to prepare for tomorrow’s challenges? In this Spore, we will discuss innovative methods and memes that self-reliant societies are using to achieve local resiliency.

The Sullivan Street Shakedown: DrumLab & Viz (Psylab), Nutritious, Swank…
The Sullivan Street Shakedown: Five, Eight, Forty. A Celebration Of Photographer Matthew Fitzgerald’s Birthday XL. Featuring: DrumLab & DJ Viz, Nutritious, Will Swank, Gregg Marcus, People In Charge, Zoe Wilder, eBonheur, Mikey Beatz, VJ Mamiko Kushida & More Special Guests TBA. We are throwing it down at The Sullivan Street Shakedown for one of the finest brothers we know. Matt Fitzgerald and his brilliant photography have been helping the scene (and us) grow strong for many years and in honor of his day of birth, we’re putting together an assortment of instrumentalists/deejays that will assemble to bring you hours of audio diamonds. These players are from some of the biggest, baddest stages around, and they’re combining on this night to pull out every stop, every trick in their book - every riff, scratch, slide, snap, boom, bam they’ve ever perfected will be projected at pleasing your soul, moving your body, and bringing this fine human into his next year of life. Matt and his keen eyes have helped breathe life into and move the careers of every performer you’ll see on this night, and with your presence (the best birthday present there is), together, we can turn the focus back on Matt and give him the soiree he so rightfully deserves. From live drum and bass, brass horns, records and cds, to v-drums and kaossed vox, there will be new genres of music formed on this night, and all of it will move you so, come ready to be moved…and dance. Special photo coverage of this night will be provided by the talented, Daniela Volpi. DrumLab: The duo of Steve (drums) and Ed (techno wizardry) of the famous psychedelic / live electronic band Psylab. DrumLab breaks it down into the strictly twisted dub elements of Psylab’s mastery and paves new ground with what can be done with a set of e-drums and lots of SUBS. People In Charge: Added to the sonic mix is the collaboration of rotating People In Charge musical guests - the opportunity for producers to rock their instruments live on stage rather than behind the recording console. On this night, Mikey Beatz (drums), eBonheur (bass), and Zoe Wilder (vocals) team with DrumLab to turn the party on its head. DJ Viz: Or Vizzie, the techno technician of Psylab fame, rocks the 1’s and 2’s, strictly vinyl, for an exploration and elaboration of the world’s finest Dub-Step and Drum & Bass. Viz is a sub-bass gourmand, so be ready to feel it in your gut. Will Swank: Swank brings with him years of touring experience with The Motet and a background in subterranean Jazz that stands the test with history’s most legendary saxophone players. Will rocks a growling tenor and phrases lines like he’s painting the future in ancient poetry. Nutritious: Is a DJ… and he rocks the shit out of parties, eBonheur: is a ninja. Zoe Wilder: ZW has shared many a stage but, most infamous for her collaborations with Psylab and the New Deal. Possibly most remembered for her shadow dancing performance at main-stage Camp Bisco 6, Wilder’s scheming something xxx-tra provocative for Five Eight Forty so, abre los ojos. VJ Mamiko Kushida: Mami should need no introduction but, new to the States after rockin Japan’s biggest events for years, Mamiko’s the most bad-ass VJ here. She’s one part kunoichi, one part Foxy Brown - she’ll super-fly slice-you and you’ll thank her for it. Update 4/27:: We’re announcing the addition of Gregg Marcus on trumpet, enhanced by Vizzie’s custom effects software “TrumpetLab”.

Unmasking the Divine Dancer
How can we communicate without words to each other and to Spirit? What happens when we are given the opportunity to express ourselves without words? Join us for a full day of frolicking and playful exploration as we unmask the Divine Dancer within us all. Step out of ordinary reality to journal, mask and dance your way into a deeper experience of reality. This course will explore the rich diversity of communication that goes beyond mere words in ways that are empowering and playful. This one day workshop affirms that our souls are multilingual by offering a variety of ways of conversing with the Divine, our higher selves and each other. Through group processes, journaling, mask making and movement–all within a safe, sacred space — you will explore the deeper more subtle realm that lies beneath our everyday reality. These tools help us cross the threshold into the collective consciousness allowing us to listen more deeply to the wisdom within us all. We will use the Fantastical Creatures Tarot to create a shared story; create Masks based on the story of the cards and explore other areas of personal relevance. We will then dance collectively and explore the language of our bodies without judgment. This is followed by more personal journaling and a closing discussion to elicit the wisdom we have just played and danced into being. Participants will discover that the act of playing is a legitimate spiritual practice for connecting to the Divine. You will also tap into the perennial wisdom and see how it speaks to our times. Darren PolitoRev. Darren Polito has been dancing all his life and it’s a love he shares willingly. He danced with the Fairmount Jazz Company in Ohio, studied at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in NYC and with Gabrielle Rother and her son Jonathan Horan. He began a monthly Ecstatic Dance program for Sacred Center NYC. He also conducts movement workshops at Moonheart Healing Arts Center and Easton Mountain Retreat Center. As an ordained Interfaith Minister, Darren envisions spreading the Gospel of Dance to all that are interested, opening new avenues for expression and connection with our Source. Helen HazletRev. Helen Hazlett is a teacher, writer, priestess, interfaith minister, and life-long learner. She has over 30 years experience as a group facilitator. Infected mushroom holographic show with reality engine
Psy-Trance innovators Infected Mushroom have become one of the biggest electronic bands on the planet. Twice ranked among the world’s 10 best DJs by the bible of the scene, the U.K.’s DJ Magazine, the Israel-bred, L.A. based duo bring a frenetic rock energy to NYC. Their explosive show, featuring guitars, live drums, intensely passionate vocals and an ambitious holographic installation multimedia backdrop, done in collaboration with Reality Engine, ranks among the genre’s most unpredictably joyous events. And their recordings continually venture where other electronic acts fear to tread. Amit “Duvdev” Duvedevani and Erez Eisen have been working for nearly two years on an aggressive new album – their first since 2007’s critically acclaimed Vicious Delicious – for dance-music visionary Paul Oakenfold’s Perfecto label. Duvdev describes the as-yet untitled record, recorded at Infected Mushroom Laboratory in L.A. and slated for a June 2009 release, as a return to the pair’s metal roots. Guests include singer Jonathan Davis of Korn, who lends his estimable pipes to the track “Smashing the Opponent.”

Her schoolmates are obsessed with consumer products and brands. To her, they are virtual robots speaking in slogans and jingles. Her mother, Karen, is a master marketer who will stop at nothing to get her clients what they need—child consumers. Part expose, part satire “Generation buY” shares the real life techniques of marketers to kids: surreptitious video taping, packaged slumber parties for teenage girls, and Youth Marketing International, who is proud to get brands (i.e. McDonalds, X-Box) into schools as part of actual student lesson plans. With everyone around her out to “sell her”, how will Vanessa survive? “Generation buY” examines the theme of marketing to children. Conceived and directed by Philip Suraci, the play is written in collaboration with and performed by a young (ages 11to 13) ensemble of 15 kids plus three adult actors, to be seen by an audience of both adults and children over the age of ten. Theater for the New City, 155 First Avenue, will present the work May 6 to 16. Through humor, song, shadow puppets, and story telling, “Generation buY” explores the moral ambiguities of advertising to youth: cause marketing, the selling of sugar as a recreational drug, the co-opting of rock and roll, cartoons, and “cool.” Adults in attendance are asked to wonder if American society treats its children as anything more than vessels of consumption. It’s the second play by-kids-for-adults to be directed by Philip Suraci at Theater for the New City. The first was “Lysistrata’s Children”, in 2008. While pursuing a master’s degree in educational theater (NYU 2004), Suraci was deeply impressed by the depth and complexity of thought of relatively young people (ages 10-13). When these students and their words were placed in a dramatic context, Suraci found the result to be powerful and provocative. The young actors are Lola Buncher, Eli Cauley, Ty Cotton, Priscilla Delmoral, Leila Eliot, Mykel Macedon, Will Mairs, Malcolm McKenzie, Tiffany Otero, Valentine Petrillo, Willa Pittman, Frances Raybaud, Kendrik Shoji, Mitchel Thomas, Jason Vazquez, Malcom Zelaya. The adult actors are Tom O’Connor, Sheira Feuerstein and Jackie Donnaruma. Musical Director is Joseph Albano Feiger. Choreography is by Barry Blumenfeld. Set Design is by Mark Marcante. Lighting Design is by Alex Bartenieff. Costume Design is by Kat Martin. Mask and puppet design are by Spica Wobbe. Graphic Design is by Fred Sullivan and AVDrive. Art Design is by Ray Felix. Critics are invited on or after May 6.

Growing Food Justice
Growing Food Justice: How going local can help feed our city… and the world. As Shavuot approaches and we reflect on the significance of harvest festivals in contemporary (urban) times, the AJWS-AVODAH Partnership is thrilled to host an interactive program on hunger in NYC and what you can do about it. Join us for a panel discussion followed by an opportunity to take action as a community. Light dinner and registration at 6:30pm, program at 7pm sharp. Speakers include: Joel Berg – Executive Director of the New York City Coalition Against Hunger, author of All You Can Eat: How Hungry is America? Daniel Bowman Simon – Trailblazer behind the People’s Garden NYC campaign (http://www.PeoplesGardenNYC.org) and founder of the successful White House Organic Farm Project. Rabbi Brent Spodek – Rabbi in Residence at American Jewish World Service. Karen Washington – Longtime urban gardener and food justice activist and president of the NYC Community Gardens Coalition. Together we’ll learn about the reality of hunger in NYC and about some innovative (local) approaches to tackling it. Joel Berg will paint a picture of hunger in one of wealthiest cities in the world and Karen Washington will discuss the power and importance of the community garden movement in helping New Yorkers to feed themselves. Daniel Bowman Simon will share his own story of helping to establish the now famous White House Kitchen Garden as well as outline how his newest project aims to bring a garden to City Hall that would supply emergency food providers with fresh local produce. In the spirit of Shavuot, Rabbi Spodek will frame our discussion around Jewish imperatives towards justice. Guests will be invited to offer concrete volunteer power to the People’s Garden NYC campaign with a post-program action party. This program is brought to you by the AJWS-AVODAH Partnership and is co-sponsored by our friends at Hazon.
