Sound Unbound: DJ Spooky’ s Book Release Party

The book is called Sound Unbound and it’s a manifesto about sound art, digital media, and what Spooky likes to call contemporary composition. It has essays and interviews from people as diverse as Brian Eno, Pierre Boulez, Moby, Chuck D, Saul Williams, Jaron Lanier, Pauline Oliveros, Naeem Mohaiemen, and others. The audio companion to the book has super rare material from Sub Rosa Records, one of my favorite indie labels. IN addition, Spooky has gotten rare material from Allen Ginsberg, James Joyce, Gertrude Stein, Iggy Pop, Jean Cocteau, Vladimir Mayakovsky, and lots other others. I guess you can think of the book as a kind of literary mashup. We’re having the Sound Unbound book launch event at McNally Robinson, a great bookstore. The launch event will be between me and Jonathan Lethem, the legendary writer. We’re doing readings from my book and Jonathan’s new novel You Don’t Love Me Yet. The bookstore is really easy to reach, and I think everyone on the list in NY would probably be into the vibe. Who knows, we’ll have a remixable Allen Ginsberg party afterwards…

Ellis Island: Auction to Burn

Please come out and support the Burning of our Artwork by joining us for an Art Auction to raise funds for a NYC Community Burn: Ellis Island - Black Rock City. We have an amazing community of people here in New York who go to Nevada every year to attend the Burning Man festival, but up until now we do not have an event at Burning Man where we all gather together in one place. This year, the American Dream, is the year to make that happen. Friday night on the playa we will burn the Ellis Island installation with New York fire performers, DJ’s, and play “New York, New York” as the artwork erupts into a pyrotechnic display and burns. We have funding to produce the art, but not to burn it. Please support a New York community Burn. This is your opportunity to own some fabulous art and support having a New York Community Burn on the playa by bidding on the following fabulous items up for auction: Carl Saytor: Burning Man Photographs. J. Gavin Heck: Sock Puppet. Amy Shapiro: Glow Screen, freeze your shadow on a glow-in-the-dark backdrop. Lizzie Steelheart: Haircut. CJ Brody: Custom made hair fall. Myong Noh: Kimono and Mask. Rich Orloff: Rehearsal script COME AGAIN, “a comedy in five sexual acts”. Robin Morris: Jewelry. Philip Riley: art to be determined. Daniel Stuelpnagel: Painting.
Ethics on the Air - (WBAI-99.5 FM)

Topic: “Rankism: The Unethical Response,” with guest Dr. Robert Fuller

We’ve all heard the term, “to pull rank.” It means to prevail in a disagreement not because of a superior argument, but because of claiming personal superiority. “I’m right because I’ve got the power.” It amounts to a put-down. Dr. Robert Fuller has written two books on the subject, Somebodies and Nobodies and All Rise. He finds that rankism is the chief remaining obstacle to achieving liberty and justice for all, and proposes a “dignitarian” society in which rankism is no longer tolerated. Tune in to find how rankism is rife in our social and civic institutions and how the politics of dignity can put the “we” back in “We the people.” Dr. Fuller says that the next natural step in the progress of democracy is the building of a dignitarian society. And raising our consciousness about rankism helps clear up confusion in our personal dealings with others — the times when we are unable to grasp what the real problem is. Hosted by Andra Miller and Dr. Phyllis Harrison-Ross. For more information contact Marc Bernstein at 212-874-5210, ext. 112, or email him at mbernstein@nysec.org. How to get here. Our historic building is on 64th Street at Central Park West, two blocks east of Lincoln Center and five blocks north of Columbus Circle.

Suzanne Blackburn will open this event with a reading from her new book, Reclaiming Eros: Sacred Whores and Healers.
Short Films about the Bike

Bike Shorts 4. Last week’s Bike Shorts was a huge success, yet again. Galapagos was packed full of bike enthusiasts and talented filmmakers. On top of that, we’ve been invited back for another screening on March 30th! We featured films from several regular contributors, including “Sunchasers” a beautiful piece on paralympic track cyclists by last month’s winner, Irvin Coffee. Five short pieces were submitted by Kierie Piccininni, who has been making a film a day for the past 80 days and counting. Keep track of her work on her youtube channel: citizenbybike. One submission we regretfully had to cut from our program (due to length) was from Streetfilm’s Clarence Eckerson, on Bogota’s Ciclovia. When all was said and done, the clear winner was the epic action flick, starring NYC’s newest, sexiest bike heroines, the Thunderlips.

Burner Lab

Greetings New York. Your five Regionals — Cory, Oscar and Abby recently joined by Alex and Dave (aka Lady Merv, Oman, Abby, Cinemagirl and Not that Dave) — are excited to announce their first collaborative community endeavor: The Burner Lab. What’s The Burner Lab, you ask? Well. It will be five full hours of opportunities to meet fellow Burning Man folks, much like our annual Meet & Greet, but this time it’s happening Sooner. And so there will be plenty of time to: * Represent your theme camp to recruit new members. * Come in search of a theme camp looking for new members. * Show off your concepts, designs, sketches, ideas and (American?) dreams for your 2008 Burning Man art projects! And perhaps find people to help you realize your dream. * Look for artists who need help with their projects. * Share your very special talent: EL Wiring, Glue Gunning, Poi Spinning (no fire, just tennis balls or bean bags, please!), Sewing, Tiara Making (can someone fly Stacycats into town? Or “represent”?), Tutu Making, etc. * Come and learn a new talent. * Any other fabulous ideas you wonderfully creative people might have. If you would like to present (teach a craft, show off your art project ideas, represent your theme camp), please email me offlist so I can schedule you, make sure you have space and include you in future announcements. If you would like to participate, please mark your calendar and stop on by. Plus stay tuned for future announcements about what will be happening when, so you can catch what interests you. This will be an Open House type event, all ages, and nothing will be for sale. The venue is the Lower East Side Girls’ Club on First St. just off of First Ave. They have graciously offered their space for only the cost of one staff person to open up for us. We would love for this to be a free event but we are asking everyone to make a donation if you can afford to. Any money raised beyond the $50 for their staff person will be donated to the LESGC to help send their girls to New Orleans: “With your support we will be able to take 25 girls and staff to New Orleans in April to participate in VDay events, meet local young women, and work with the YA/YAs-youth artists.” http://www.girlsclub.org. This event will also be a Leave No Trace event, so please plan on cleaning up after yourselves! We hope to have a few surprises for you in addition to the oodles of creative and social opportunities! And it’ll also be the perfect place to meet All five of your friendly Regionals face to face. Get ready to cook up some magical things at The Burner Lab. We are very much looking forward to seeing you. Abby, Cory, Alex, Dave and Oscar

Everything is God; An Introduction to Non-Dual Judaism with Jay Michaelson

The principle of non-duality—that everything is One—is familiar to spiritual seekers from a variety of mystical paths. Kabbalah, Judaism’s mystical and esoteric tradition, also expresses this idea, in uniquely provocative and sometimes startling ways. This evening we’ll combine text study (from sources as diverse as Maimonides’ Guide to the Perplexed, the Zohar, and the Baal Shem Tov), contemplation and discussion to explore key Jewish teachings on nonduality. We will also offer comparative insights and explore how non-duality is actually lived—so please bring your own knowledge and experience (from any tradition) to add to the conversation, and be prepared for surprise: enlightenment is not what you think… and neither is God. Jay Michaelson has taught Kabbalah and spirituality for over 15 years at institutions ranging from Yale University to Elat Chayyim. He is a visiting professor at Boston University Law School and the author of God in Your Body: Kabbalah, Mindfulness and Embodied Spiritual Practice and the soon-to-be-published Non-dual Judaism. www.metatronics.net
